South Carolina baseball All-American heading to the World Series
A South Carolina baseball legend has advanced to the World Series. Right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt and the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in game five of the American League Championship Series to take the series 4-1.
During the ALCS, Schmidt earned the start on the mound in game four of the series. He pitched for 4.2 innings and gave up five hits and just two runs. Ultimately, the Yankees bullpen blew the game in extra innings.
Earling in the postseason, Clarke Schmidt helped guide New York to a victory. Facing off against the Kansas City Royals in the American League Divisional Series in the first playoff start of his career, the Georgia native also tossed 4.2 innings of two-run ball while giving up just four hits and posting a 4-1 K/BB ratio.

Schmidt’s solid postseason efforts followed a career-best showing during the regular season. Schmidt posted the top numbers of his young career in ERA, WHIP, K/9, and WAR. He missed around half of the season with a lat injury but seemed poised for his first MLB All-Star Game selection prior to the ailment. He returned just in time to ramp up for the postseason. It paid off as the Bronx Bombers are heading back to the World Series for the first time since 2009.

During his South Carolina baseball days, Clarke Schmidt was an All-American and All-SEC performer. His 2017 junior season was on pace to be one of the best in program history. However, an elbow injury cut his college career short. Even so, the all-time great Gamecock earned a first round selection in the MLB Draft.
The Yankees await the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets NLCS series. Game one of the World Series begins on Friday, October 25th. Schmidt should be in line for at least one World Series start.
