South Carolina baseball scrimmage notes and observations: Oct. 21
The mound was hot for the pitching staff in yet another South Carolina fall scrimmage.
A mix of returners, transfers and freshman pitchers all saw just one inning facing five batters or less and collectively excelled.
Here are some notes and observations from the evening:
– Continuing his return to action, Eli Jerzembeck started the game on the mound and threw to just five batters. Jerzembeck sat consistently around 93 MPH with one strikeout, no walks and no runs.
– Dylan Eskew continues to show off his veteran experience facing just three batters in his one inning and throwing one strikeout.
– In very similar back-to-back innings, Ashton Crowther and Brandon Stone both sat in the high 80-low 90 MPH range. Both pitchers threw to just four batters with one walk and no strikeouts.
– Matthew Becker had a noticeably slower pace on the mound than any other pitcher throughout the scrimmage. Becker threw in the low 90 MPH range with one strikeout.
– In-state transfer Aydin Palmer faced just three batters throwing back-to-back strikeouts. Palmer was also fast on his feet with good fielding as he was responsible for all three outs.

– Junior transfer Jase Woita continues to see lots of time. Woita bunted for an out in the top of the sixth and then returned one batter later with a hard-hit single up the middle.
– Despite some offensive struggles, freshman Beau Hollins continues to perform at first base and grabbed multiple outs. With some improvements at the plate, fans could be seeing a lot of Hollins in the spring.
– The biggest at-bat of the scrimmage came from Dalton Mashore early in the sixth. Mashore tripled deep to center and would eventually score the scrimmage-tying run off a Hollins sac fly.
– KJ Scobey looked really strong and confident defensively at third as he was responsible for five of the evening’s outs.
– An eager Jordan Carrion continues to make contact even if he isn’t getting on base. Carrion went 0-for-2 at the plate grounding out to short and flying out to right.
– Notably, Evan Stone assumed the lead off role for the Garnet team after last night’s homer. But Stone went 0-for-3 with a batters interference.
