South Carolina basketball legend takes Columbia-area head coaching gig
South Carolina basketball alum Larry Davis is heading back to the Columbia area. Per a report from Lou Bezjak of The State, Davis will be the next head coach at Brookland-Cayce High School. He makes the move to BC following three seasons coaching at Mars Hill University in North Carolina. With the Bearcats, he replaces Robert Wells, who is now the headman at Lexington High School.
Previously, Davis spent nearly a decade as a head coach in the Palmetto State. He made stops at Lewisville, Northwestern, and York Prep, winning a title at Lewisville.
Davis also played his high school ball in the state. Starring at Denmark-Olar in the late ’80s and early ’90s, he set a record for single-season scoring. Davis signed with North Carolina but played sparingly for two years before transferring to South Carolina. He became a star with his home-state Gamecocks.

During his two-year South Carolina basketball career, Davis made the All-SEC squad twice as part of a three-headed monster on the perimeter for USC. Playing alongside Melvin Watson and BJ McKie, Davis helped guide the Gamecocks to a nine-game improvement in his first year and then another five-game improvement in the second. Those two years were the start of a three-year run in which South Carolina won 66 games and made two NCAA Tournaments. That was the only time outside of the Frank McGuire era in which that has been accomplished.

As a senior during the 1996-1997 season, Davis was a part of the only SEC Championship team in Carolina history. The 24-8 Gamecocks went 15-1 in conference play and earned a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Davis finished his Gamecock playing days having logged 17.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. USC inducted Davis into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
