Report: South Carolina hires son of former NFL coach to analyst gig

South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains took the head coaching job at Appalachian State in December. Following his hire, he took a pair of Gamecock off-field assistants (Ryan Yurachek and Riley Watkins) to join his offensive staff.
Because of that, Shane Beamer needed to make a couple of hires. On Saturday, news surfaced that he had filled one of those openings.
Per a report from The State sports reporter Jordan Kaye, South Carolina is bringing on Davis Koetter. Koetter, the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona State Sun Devils head coach Dirk Koetter, will come to Columbia after spending more than two years with the Texas Longhorns. At this time, Koetter’s role at USC hasn’t been announced.

During his time at Texas, Koetter worked with the offense. He helped the Longhorns to back-to-back College Football Playoff.

Koetter also interviewed for the quarterback coaching vacancy at Boise State this offseason. He finished his playing days as a wide receiver at BSU, and his father is the team’s offensive coordinator.
The NCAA has relaxed its rules regarding assistant numbers and duty restrictions. Because of that, South Carolina has had the freedom to add (or not add) replacements for Watkins or Yurachek.
Even after Koetter’s addition to the staff, the Gamecocks will have flexibility moving forward. The new rules also will allow Koetter to coach on the field if that is what Beamer wants him to do.
