South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his coaching staff have about a week before National Signing Day. (Remember when recruits signed in February?) The Early Signing Period begins Wednesday, December 4th, and the majority of teams’ high school recruiting classes will be completed by the time the Early Signing Period ends on Friday, December 6th. In the weeks leading up to NSD, GamecockCentral will profile each player in the 2025 recruiting class. Today, we will look at defensive lineman Caleb Williams.

Caleb Williams was an early commitment to the South Carolina football program, joining the fold last spring. Several programs, including the rival Georgia Bulldogs, have pushed for a flip. Williams, though, shut that talk down early and made it clear he was sticking with the Gamecocks.

The Virginia native is a versatile defensive lineman who probably will slide inside full-time at the college level. Williams has an impressive frame. At 6’6″ and 260 pounds, he looks like a huge defensive end. However, he has a strong base that will help him add weight to become a long, athletic defensive tackle after spending some time in a collegiate weight room and nutrition program.

As a player, Caleb Williams has some real potential. He has a good initial punch at the snap, doing a good job of knocking offensive linemen back a bit as he diagnoses the play in front of him. He also has a knack for knocking down passes at the line of scrimmage, perhaps thanks to his experience as a big man on the basketball court. Williams is strong against the run and has enough length and athleticism to develop into a dangerous interior pass rusher, too.

Playing time on next year’s defensive line is extremely available. The Gamecocks are losing (at least) their top four defensive tackles in TJ Sanders, Tonka Hemingway, Boogie Huntley, and DeAndre Jules to graduation and/or the NFL, and right now, Williams is the only tackle committed in the class of 2025. Naturally, South Carolina will hit the portal to help fill that need. However, the freshman could battle with returners Monkell Goodwine and Nick Barrett for some snaps. It won’t be easy as development could go a long way for Williams, but roles will be up for grabs.

Along with 4-star safety Kendall Daniels, Williams is one of two prospects from Virginia heading to Columbia in 2025. The two players’ commitments continue the USC trend of landing players from Virginia and the DMV area.
