South Carolina football will open its 2025 season with a neutral-site contest against the Virginia Tech Hokies at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game will be on Sunday, August 31st, and on Tuesday, the Gamecocks learned kickoff time and television information for the opener. Long-time college football reporter Brett McMurphy reported that USC and VT will kick off at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN.

Notre Dame-Miami is the other major game scheduled for that Sunday. The Irish and Hurricanes will begin their respective 2025 campaigns at 7:30 p.m.

USC-VT is one of four opening weekend SEC vs. ACC matchups. Syracuse-Tennessee will be in Atlanta the day before (8/30) at Noon. Then, Alabama will play at Florida State at 3:30 p.m., and LSU will play at Clemson at 7:30 p.m..

Following a strong finish to the 2024 regular season, South Carolina will look to take the next step in 2025. The Gamecocks were a win away from the expanded postseason and have been a popular choice this offseason to earn a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff this fall. Even the outlets that aren’t projecting Shane Beamer’s team as high still view them as a top-25 group.

The August 31st Aflac Kickoff Game will be the 21st between South Carolina and Virginia Tech. The Gamecocks own the all-time series with an 11-7-2 record. Tech hasn’t won the last six meetings as garnet outclassed maroon four times and the two teams tied twice. None of the players in this year’s game will have been alive for the most recent meeting, though, as it came in 1991.

Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer’s father Frank led Virginia Tech for five games in the series, going 0-4-1. Years later, the younger Beamer worked for his father at VT but never faced South Carolina.
