Spencer Rattler was among the numerous Gamecocks players and coaches that made efforts to recruit five-star Nyckoles Harbor, who inked a letter of intent with USC back on Wednesday.

Heading into his second season starting for Shane Beamer’s program, Rattler is excited to add a weapon like Harbor to the ranks.

“Watching his tape, watching his track film, you’ve never seen anybody that big, that fast,” Rattler said during an appearance on the Gamecock Central Takeover Hour on Tuesday on 107.5 The Game. “We had to go get somebody like the two could do that type of stuff. I did my best to recruit him, and a lot of other coaches and players.”

Rattler went as far as to say he had not seen a player with the size and speed combination that Harbor will bring to the field.

“I haven’t. That’s very impressive,” said Rattler. “When he visited here last year, at one of those recruit days, I know who he was. I met him and was like wow, OK, that’s very impressive. He’s 6-5, 230, running 10.2, 10.3. We all had a pretty good feeling that he wanted to be here and signing day came and he made the announcement. We’re all fired up to get him down here and get him to work.”

In addition to the addition of Harbor in the summer, the Gamecocks also have some newcomers on the offensive side of the ball that Rattler will be throwing to this year. As one of the players that is one of the team’s “cornerstone captains”, Rattler has been a key part of helping them acclimate to Columbia.

“Being one of those guys, pushing the new guys, helping the new guys, the freshmen, the transfers, just getting them used to everything,” he said. “They’re doing great, all the freshmen, transfers.”

In organizing the throwing sessions between quarterbacks and tight ends, Rattler has been very happy with what he’s seen from the transfer tight ends in particular.

“Our tight end room is very deep. A lot of big guys, athletic guys. Trey Knox is very impressive, Josh (Simon) is, too. I got to see a little bit of Nick (Elksnis) from Florida and the young guys are coming along. You can just tell Trey and Josh have got that experience from where they’ve played. Their film is great and they’re going to help us even more, hopefully be mismatches across the field,” Rattler explained.

The Gamecocks also add Memphis transfer Eddie Lewis, who is widely seen as a potential replacement for Josh Vann.

“I like him. He’s an athletic, fast, smart guy,” Rattler said of Lewis. “He’s got experience in college football at a high level. He’s getting used to the workouts and schedule we’ve got, so it’s different for him. He’s got good hands, a good route runner. He’s impressed us. We’re excited to get to spring ball and see what these guys are all about.”
