On Tuesday’s episode of the GC Takeover Hour, Spencer Rattler discussed South Carolina’s new-look offense under Dowell Loggains.

Loggains was hired in December 2022 to replace Marcus Satterfield, who is now the offensive coordinator at Nebraska.

Rattler said he talked to Loggains about the Gamecock offense’s setup recently after Loggains returned from recruiting trips.

“We finally got to sit down (and) go over formations, go over personnel groupings,” Rattler said. “Not anything play-oriented yet, but just the basic stuff. A lot of stuff that will be new to us, but a lot of stuff we already know, so we’ll be able to build off it.”

He added that a notable offensive change implemented by Loggains is an increase in tempo with a pro-style feel.

“A big point for us is speeding things up and getting that tempo down because we all like to play at a high tempo and get things going and hopefully score a lot of points,” Rattler said. “Everything we’ve talked about is just efficiency, tempo, making things clear… and just letting us go out there and play.”

For Rattler, playing at a high tempo gives him and the rest of the Gamecock offense an advantage.

“I feel like you can just play free. When you know what you’re doing or you’re going fast, it gives you the upper hand because the defense can’t get set up as quick as they want to, or they get more tired,” Rattler said. “I feel like tempo, you just play free, get into that flow state almost, and just start rolling.”

Next year’s squad will also feature some new personnel, including in the tight end room. Trey Knox, Joshua Simon and Nick Elksnis joined via the portal, and more will come from this year’s recruiting class.

Rattler said he’s liked what he’s seen from the group so far.

“Our tight end room is very deep – a lot of big, athletic guys,” Rattler said. “You can just tell Trey and Josh got that experience from where they’ve played. Obviously, their film is great, and they succeeded where they were. They’re just going to help us even more. They’re going to be hopefully mismatches across the field… so just put it up to them, (and) they gotta go make a play.”

Rattler said he’s “loved” everything Loggains talked about and the way he gets players involved in developing the team’s playbook.

“Just him saying to me and other guys, ‘Hey, he wants our input on what we like to do,’ that’s huge for us,” Rattler said. “That’s a guy we’re going to trust all year, and we’re excited to get on the field with him here in a few weeks.”
