Aliyah Boston became South Carolina’s career leader in double-doubles with her 73rd double-double.

Boston broke a tie with the great Sheila Foster for the record.

As she has done so many times, Boston missed a layup and grabbed her own rebound to give her 13 points and 10 rebounds against Arkansas, a team she has dominated in her four seasons. She has notched a double-double in all seven career games against Arkansas.

Foster, who was in attendance to see her record broken, was one of Gamecock women’s basketball’s first stars. She led the Gamecocks to the 1980 AIAW, the highlight of the Gamecocks’ most successful period prior to Dawn Staley’s arrival.

Foster retired as South Carolina’s leading scorer and rebounder, and was the first female athlete to have her jersey retired. For years, Foster’s double-double record seemed untouchable. Even as A’ja Wilson chased down Foster’s scoring record, the double-double record was unchallenged.

It requires sustained production for four seasons (72 averages to 18 per season). Players have to play starter-level minutes (20-plus) for four seasons and avoid significant injuries.

Alaina Coates (57 double-doubles) was a rebounding machine and Wilson (54 double-doubles) was so good they built a statue, and yet both finished essentially a whole season behind Foster.

Boston has 14 double-doubles this season. She set the school record for double-doubles in a season last year when she had 30. She also had 27 consecutive double-doubles, setting an SEC record and the fifth-longest streak in NCAA history.

Boston had 17 double-doubles as a sophomore, and 13 as a freshman. She is averaging a double-double for her career, at 14.2 points and 10.9 rebounds.

Boston has moved into a tie for 15th in NCAA history for career double-doubles. She needs four more to move into the top ten, and 12 more to move into the top five.

Boston set the single-season rebounding record last season, with 462 rebounds. She is second in career rebounds behind Foster. Foster had 1,427 in 134 games. Boston entered the Vanderbilt game with 1,299 career rebounds in 119 games. At her current rate, Boston could pass Foster by the end of the season.

Boston also has two triple-doubles. She is the only Gamecock, male or female, with multiple triple-doubles.
