One of the worst-kept secrets over the past few weeks in South Carolina has finally been shared publicly.

Four-star quarterback Dante Reno made it known Saturday night that he has committed to Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks.

The 6-1, 215-pounder from Loomis Chaffee (Conn.) is the first commitment for South Carolina’s class of 2024. There has been speculation that Reno could reclassify up to join the class of 2023, but that’s still to be seen. At least that was the sense around 3 p.m. on Saturday when this video was recorded.

A Massachusetts native, Reno is rated as the 17th top QB for his class by the consensus rankings. He chooses the Gamecocks over a long list of schools including Kentucky, N.C. State, Purdue, Virginia and Wake Forest.

As a sophomore, he threw for over 2,500 yards with a 66 completion percentage and complied 27 total touchdowns.

Now what the tape doesn’t tell you is that he’s the son of Yale head coach Tony Reno. Speaking with people close to Yale’s program, Reno grew up in and around the coaches office and has a strong understanding of what it takes to be successful at the college level. One coach told me, “he has a high football IQ, which will allow him to compete early. He’ll bring a winning mindset in because he’s seen it firsthand from his father.

Reno becomes the second four-star prospect to commit to South Carolina this weekend. He joins four-star running back Dontavius Braswell who committed to the Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon.
