San Francisco Giants call up former Tennessee star Drew Gilbert for Major League debut
Drew Gilbert is going to The Show.
The former Tennessee standout, who was traded by the New York Mets to the San Francisco Giants organization at the MLB Trade Deadline a few weeks ago, will become the 10th player to reach the majors from the Tony Vitello era at Tennessee. Gilbert will also be the eighth member of the 2022 squad to reach the big leagues.
Gilbert hit for a .314 average with 22 homers and 140 RBI in 141 career games as a two-year starter for Tennessee from 2020-2022. Early in his collegiate career, the lefty saw action on the mound for the Volunteers, making 11 career appearances with a 2.76 ERA.
In five games since the trade with the Sacramento River Cats, San Francisco’s Triple-A affiliate, Gilbert has logged a .500 average, going 7-for-14 at the plate with three runs scored and two runs driven in. Prior to the trade, Gilbert totaled a .243 average in 82 games with the Syracuse Mets (Triple-A), launching 12 home runs and driving in 47 runs.
Over his four minor league seasons that have now spanned three difference organizations, Gilbert has registered a .262 batting average across 282 games with 44 home runs, 153 RBI and 166 runs scored.
