Live Updates: No. 2 Tennessee vs. No. 1 Purdue in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight

DETROIT — For just the second time in program history, Tennessee basketball is back in the Elite Eight, facing Purdue on Sunday afternoon (2:20 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS) at Little Caesars Arena in the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Regional final.

Tennessee (27-8), the No. 2 seed in the Midwest, beat No. 3 Creighton 82-75 Friday night to advance out of the Sweet 16, after wins over No. 15 Saint Peter’s and No. 7 Texas in the first weekend in Charlotte.

Purdue (32-4), the No. 1 seed in the Midwest trying to avenge its loss to No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson last season, beat No. 5 Gonzaga 80-68 in the early game Friday. The Boilermakers beat No. 16 Grambling State in the first round in Indianapolis and No. 7 Utah State in the second round.

A Closer Look: The Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue is ranked No. 3 overall in the KenPom.com ratings and is No. 3 in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 126.5 points per 100 possessions. The Boilermakers are No. 17 in adjusted defensive efficiency, giving up 95.5 points per 100 possessions. Tennessee is ranked No. 6 overall according to KenPom and is No. 3 in defense (90.2) and up to No. 28 in offense (117.1).

Purdue’s four losses this season came at Northwestern, 92-88 in overtime on December 1, at Nebraska on January 9, 88-72, at Ohio State on February 18, 73-69, and on March 16 in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, 76-75 in overtime against Purdue. 

Purdue and Tennessee are far from strangers. The Boilermakers beat the Vols 71-67 in the second round of the Maui Invitational in Honolulu on November 21, behind 23 points and 14 rebounds from Zach Edey and 27 points from Fletcher Loyer.

The the two teams also met in the 2019 Sweet 16, a 99-94 overtime win for Purdue, and in the Battle 4 Atlantis in November 2017, a 78-75 Tennessee win.
