April 15 has become noteworthy for college football, including for Longhorns fans

April 15 has been a day of consternation for many Americans because of its history as income tax deadline day. But it now has an added – and happier – purpose for college football fans.

Twenty six of the teams from the Power Five conferences will conduct their spring football scrimmages on Saturday, April 15, creating a glut of football for those that want to catch up with the progress of their favorite programs from their 15 allotted spring drills.

Texas is among that group that will showcase some key members of the team that will take to the field for real when the season opens at home against Rice on Sept. 2. 

The Longhorns’ Orange-White Game, which is presented by the Texas One Fund, begins at 1 p.m. in Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Cincinnati and Kansas State are the other Big 12 teams that will be conducting their spring games on April 15. The rest of the conference shakes down like this:

March 31: BYU
April 7: Houston and Kansas
April 14: TCU and UCF
April 22: Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and Iowa State.

Seven SEC teams will play their spring games on April 15: Arkansas, Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Tennessee. 

As far as the rest of the SEC, Missouri went on March 18. The Tigers are followed by Auburn and Vanderbilt on April 8, Florida on April 13 and LSU and Alabama on April 22. Kentucky will not have a spring game.

Indiana, Penn State and Ohio State of the Big 10 will have their spring game on April 15. The Big 10’s other spring scrimmages are: Michigan on April 1; Illinois on April 20 Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern and Purdue on April 22; Maryland and Rutgers on April 29; Michigan State is TBD.

Nine of the 14 ACC teams will showcase their work from the spring on April 15: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The rest of the league will go on April 8 (North Carolina State), April 14 (Miami), April 21 (Louisville and Syracuse) and April 22 (Duke).

Lastly, the Pac 12 has four teams (Arizona, Arizona State, California and Southern California) with spring games set for April 15. Other dates for the conference are April 22 (Colorado, Oregon State, Stanford, Utah, Washington and Washington State) and April 29 (Oregon). UCLA is yet to announce the date of its spring game.
