The Texas Longhorns continue with another relatively easy part of their non-conference schedule on Wednesday night when they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson to the Moody Center for a 7 p.m. tip on SEC Network+.

FDU is the second of a four-game stretch against several low-major teams preceding Texas’ trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational. Before Texas goes to the 50th State, what does Longhorns head coach Sean Miller want to see from his team over the next few games, specifically on offense?

“For us, pace of play. We have to get to a point where we understand playing at a faster rate doesn’t mean shoot quick but playing throughout that 40 minutes and having more pressure on the defense,” Miller said Monday. “The second thing, from an offensive perspective, is just being sharper. We have a few segments in each game where one guy is off the page and we don’t run the set play that was called like we should have.”

Texas is currently No. 182 in KenPom‘s adjusted tempo with 71.6 possessions per 40 minutes, adjusted for opponent. IU Indianapolis leads the nation in adjusted tempo with 77.8 possessions per 40 minutes, adjusted for opponent. Alabama is No. 2 at a mark of 77.3.

So far, the Longhorns have played KenPom No. 1 Duke and No. 315 Lafayette, so Miller wants to see not only his team’s adjusted possessions climb up, but also the Longhorns’ total number of opportunities to score the basketball.

Texas had 65 possessions as part of a 75-60 loss to the Blue Devils. The Longhorns followed that up with 68 possessions against Lafayette on Saturday in a 97-60 victory.

Moving quicker, crisper, and with more purpose as Texas faces teams that rank No. 350 (FDU), No. 336 (UM-Kansas City), and No. 323 (Rider) should be an achievable task for Miller and company before they leave the contiguous 48 states for the Maui Invitational.
