The first national signing period for college football runs from December 21-23. That puts it a week later than normal, which allows you even more time to familiarize yourself with the next class charged with helping restore Texas back to national prominence.

The preceding 2022 class is already off to a good start, but the way to win at a consistently high level is to stack talented class after talented class. At all times you need young players developing, creating competition, and providing valuable depth before becoming quality starters.

The top 5 contending 2023 class is just what Texas needed after the top 5 2022 class.

In the lead-up to NSD1, Inside Texas will offer profiles of each member of the 2023 signing class.

Next up, Billy Walton.

The Player: Billy Walton, EDGE, Dallas (Texas) South Oak Cliff, 6-foot-3, 225-pounds

The Rating: 88.55, On3 Consensus three-star

The Ranking: No. 44 EDGE, No. 67 in Texas

The Recruitment: Walton burst on the scene last spring after a strong junior season for the 5A DII state champs. He picked up double-digit offers from Texas A&M, Tennessee, TCU, and Nebraska. He committed to Oklahoma State soon after and that lasted a few months. After his Texas verbal invitation came through, it was only a matter of time. After his official visit to Austin, Walton committed to UT on June 28th during a flurry of commitments for the Longhorns that month.

The Projection: The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has the ideal frame for an EDGE-backer at the next level. He bends the edge and attacks quarterbacks for a living. He has strong hands and upper body that allows him strength at the point of attack. He has the athleticism to beat most offensive tackles around the edge.

The Reasoning: “It felt like home. The coaches are transparent. When I went to practice, how the coaches treated me was exactly how they treated the players. It’s not fake, it’s real and genuine. I know they mean family business in Austin.” – Billy Walton

The Relationship: “I’m probably closest to coach PK. I feel like he’ll really help me grown as a player and as a man. I’m probably closest to Byron Murphy (Texas defensive lineman). He’s like family.” – Walton

The Education: Business. Walton wants to start his own business one day.

The Final Word: Walton is joining his cousin, Malik Muhammad, in Austin for the Class of 2023. The South Oak Cliff duo clinched their second consecutive state championship on Friday night from AT&T Stadium. Walton is coming in at a very strong need position for Pete Kwiatkowski and the staff. Walton’s build is already solid, and with a couple years in a college strength and conditioning, could grow into an absolute monster. He has the mentality for it.
