Texas was bad at a number of important things in 2021, hence the 5-7 record and routine losses in close games in which they held leads. The story of the season was mostly Steve Sarkisian scripting scoring opportunities early in the game to generate leads before the superior experience, depth, and fundamentals of the Longhorns' opponents would gradually win out. The 2014 Longhorns were similar on offense, sometimes showing early life before running out of scripted plays and collapsing. For those who can remember the Mack Brown Longhorns, those teams operated very differently. With quarterbacks like Vince Young or Colt McCoy driving well-oiled machines, or defenses loaded with rangy, professional caliber defensive backs, you couldn't count on staying ahead of Texas for long before they'd worked out your gameplan or script and started to lean on you with superior talent and drill. Making the flip to winning 10 games again will require Texas to develop the talent on their roster so they can consistently lean on their opponents and beat them down over the course of a full game. We're heading into a very important spring for Sarkisian and his rebuilt roster. Here's a glimpse into what the position coaches will be aiming to shore up in order to build a unit which can out-execute opponents down the stretch.
