Jamarion Miller: Running through records and playoffs

Tyler Legacy running back, On300 prospect for 2022, and UT pledge is making history in East Texas, one game at a time.

After knocking off state-ranked and undefeated Garland last Friday, the Legacy Red Raiders will face Cedar Hill at Globe Life Park in Arlington on Saturday. And Miller gets a chance to build on his school rushing record.

In the second quarter last Friday, Miller’s one-yard run at the goal-line put him over 4,749 yards for his career, shattering Tyrone Ross’ previous mark in 2004. Miller finished with 128 yards rushing on 12 carries and one score, and added 75 yards receiving on three catches, including the game-winning 29-yard touchdown catch.

For Miller, this has been a long time coming. Growing up in John Tyler blue, he moved to Legacy his freshman year and began playing varsity that same season.

“Breaking this record, I’m speechless at the moment,” Miller said. “I’m really proud of myself and I’m proud of the team for helping me be able to beat that record, and I just want to say thanks to everyone. It feels wonderful to win another playoff game, and now we get to focus on next week.”

I asked Miller what was the most important; winning or breaking the record. His answer was very Jamarion-like.

“Ohh that’s a good question,” Miller explained. “It’s winning, of course, and getting to advance with my teammates. You know, with record, I wasn’t really thinking about it, I’m thinking about the team, and for us to get farther in the playoffs, you know, and that’s the way you’re supposed to think. It’s supposed to be team first. It was a total team effort.

The difference in this game and the rest of the season was preparation.

“(Legacy) were more prepared this week,” said Miller. “You know, we had great energy on the sideline, and everybody was locked in from when we got off the bus until until the game started.“

While Miller’s sights remain on Cedar Hill, there’s still colleges trying to persuade the four-star tailback to flip his commitment, notably Alabama.

Miller took an official visit to Tuscaloosa recently and came away impressed with the Crimson Tide. Add to the fact Nick Saban is making him a priority, and you can see why Texas is holding on tight. The UT staff reached out to the Miller family today, checking in and checking on the Class of 2022 commit. Miller’s family fully acknowledges Steve Sarkisian and company are the right guys for the job in Austin. Jamarion’s relationship with coach Sarkisian, Brandon Harris, and Stan Drayton remains strong.

Miller has mentioned using his last official visit, probably to Nebraska, who was on-hand at Williams Stadium in Garland on Friday. But with the Red Raiders still in the playoffs, his focus will likely remain on the task at hand; helping Tyler Legacy make the third round of the playoffs for the first time in well over a decade.

Miller fully intends on enrolling early in college, so a change this late in his recruitment gets less likely by the day. Just have to keep a watch on Alabama until December 15th.
