When Texas cornerback Josh Thompson was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., he knew he had an opportunity to shine. After running an official 4.40 40-yard dash on Sunday, he certainly has more of a glow.

The Nacogdoches (Texas) native signed with UT’s Class of 2017, following in the footsteps of former Nacogdoches and Texas safety Brandon Jones, who currently starts for the Miami Dolphins.

The fifth-year defensive back played in 45 games with 22 starts, and competed in the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

A 2021 preseason watch list candidate for the Lott IMPACT Award, Thompson made his collegiate debut against Maryland in 2017 after garnering All-American status in high school, where he also was an all-state and two-time all-district honoree.

Thompson recorded 34 tackles (23 solo), one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, one interception (returned for a touchdown), one quarterback hurry and broke up two passes during his senior year in Austin. He finished his collegiate career with 108 total tackles, five tackles for a loss, and two interceptions.

Thompson seeks to join the 351 Longhorns drafted in the history of the NFL Draft. In the 2021 NFL Draft, Texas had Sam CosmiJoseph OssaiTa’Quon GrahamCaden Sterns, and Sam Ehlinger selected. Sterns was the last defensive back from Texas selected in the draft. Analysts currently believe Thompson is a late-round prospect.
