Wells remarked that the “vibe” among recruits about Texas is much different now than it was when coach Steve Sarkisian first arrived in Austin.

“The best way to kind of get that vibe or figure out where kids are at is asking them, just talking to them,” Wells said. “That first year it was a good culture, good low vibe, but it was new, a lot of transition a lot of moving parts and a couple of players telling me it felt a little disorganized because they were throwing a lot of stuff together that early January and February.

“Then last year it amped up as Texas’ recruiting pitch streamlined and they got the facilities finished. A lot of recruits resonated with it. They thought ‘okay, this, this is something good.’

“Now we’re looking at Year 3, and I’ll quote Javion Holiday, the 2025 safety out of Duncanville, who said ‘man that place… they’re good and they know they’re good’”

Wells said players can tell when other players are happy or not.

“They can tell if they’re just going through the motions,” Wells said. “They can tell if they’re just going through it. Nowadays the prospects can read the players, they read the coaches and they love those things.

“Each one of them comes up with something a unique but the truth is that the message is pretty much the same – they love the culture (at Texas); they love the vibe. They love getting coached up. These Texas coaches teach in these elite camps and that’s one of the takeaways from the players. You know, it was really consistent with a lot of those guys. It’s so much different than it was in Sark’s first year and that tells you this program is headed in the right direction.”

The duo spoke about the heightened interest in Texas and the commitment on Saturday from Alabama quarterback KJ Lacey, who had entertained offers from the Crimson Tide as well as TCU, Oregon, Oklahoma and Tennessee before announcing his commitment to the Longhorns.

“People should just prepare – Sark is going to bring in an elite quarterback almost every cycle,” Wells said. “That’s just what he’s got. If he’s not elite, he’s going to be a developmental kid that could potentially be elite.”

Burton added that Sarkisian is becoming a “quarterback magnet.”

“I mean that’s essentially what’s happening,” Burton said. “He is getting guys that he wants over and over again. And it’s one of those things where you know, frankly, Texas is looking very, very good there.”
