A year ago, Ryan Day was under fire for underperforming. Now, having secured a national title, his status has skyrocketed—he’s been given a contract extension, considered for the Hall of Fame, and might even earn a statue in Columbus.
Unlike last year’s team with returning veterans, the new Buckeyes roster is marked by turnover, including a new quarterback and leadership group. Despite these changes, excitement remains high due to returning stars.
Caleb Downs, one of just three returning starters on defense, will play a pivotal role. Supported by linebacker Sonny Styles, the defense’s success may hinge on their leadership and execution.
Though a focal point, Smith may operate as a decoy due to other strong wide receiver talents. His presence and movement are expected to challenge Texas’ secondary and create space for teammates.
Replacing Jim Knowles, Matt Patricia brings NFL experience and a more flexible 4-2-5 scheme. His strategy remains cloaked after a secretive spring game, setting the stage for a surprise defensive debut against Texas.
Former WR coach Brian Hartline returns as offensive coordinator with newfound organization and play-calling readiness. Backed by Ryan Day, Hartline aims to balance a potent passing attack with a solid ground game.

A fierce competition between the experienced Lincoln Kienholz and newcomer Julian Sayin. Sayin impressed during spring and is projected to start, offering accuracy and poise reminiscent of C.J. Stroud.
Despite losing four starters, Ohio State returns several players with starting experience due to last year’s injuries. Interior strength is a major asset, but tackle readiness will be tested, especially by Texas’ Colin Simmons.
While national championship ambitions remain, all focus is on the August 30 opener against Texas. Ryan Day has kept the team laser-focused on this match, altering traditional pre-season messaging.
With a noon kickoff and urban growth, the game atmosphere is expected to be less hostile than 2005. Spencer encourages Texas fans to revisit Columbus with an open mind, as the city and its fans have evolved.
