When Desoto (Texas) RB Tre Wisner made the trip to Austin for the spring game on Saturday, leaving committed to the Texas Longhorns seemed like a distant possibility. Then it happened.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound On3 Consensus No. 8 running back in the Class of 2023 gave a verbal pledge to Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian after Saturday’s Orange-White scrimmage.

Wisner chose Texas over offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Baylor, and LSU. When new running backs coach Tashard Choice entered the picture, this pursuit changed directions.

“At first, Texas wasn’t as high because coach (Stan) Drayton wasn’t after me, but when coach Choice came in, it picked up and he’s doing an awesome job staying in contact with me and that’s what it’s all about,” said Wisner. “They’re in it for sure and when I drop my top five it wouldn’t be surprising all to see Texas in it.”

Wisner released his top eight this spring – Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oregon, Arkansas, Florida State, Oklahoma State, and USC.

Wisner was named the Texas District 9-4A-II Co-Offensive MVP in 2021. He rushed for 909 yards and 12 touchdowns on just 77 carries, and added 241 yards on 18 catches in the passing game. On defense, Wisner totaled 77 tackles, one interception and a forced fumble.

Wisner is the No. 203 player in the nation regardless of position on the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3 rates him as the No. 21 running back in the class.
