Burn it all down. Fire this coach or that one. Replace this player or that one. I think I’ve heard it all after losses like Saturday’s. But now is not the time to overreact.

Why?

Because Texas is playing a good brand of football unlike a year ago. The Horns just lost to the No. 11 team in the country on the road by a touchdown.

Like it or not, and whether you want or expect more, that’s marked progress.

Some times it takes time to build a solid foundation. Some times it takes time to put the pieces in place to become a better team and a better program.

I remain highly confident that that is exactly what Steve Sarkisian is doing.

And it starts with the most important position on the football field. At quarterback.

While talented, Quinn Ewers is far from perfect. Saturday was a blunt reminder of that.

But every week, he is gaining much-needed experience. As Texas tries to take the next steps as a program, the Horns are going to need a quarterback who has seen it all, has prepared for it and has executed against it.

That’s exactly what Spencer Sanders and Max Duggan, and even Adrian Martinez, have done. All three are four-year starters and it’s no secret that two of those three teams sit atop the Big 12 leaderboard.

Of course, it’s not just the quarterback who must continue to progress. But it’s the team as a whole.

And we are seeing progress there.

Outside of kicker, is there a single position on the football field that is worse off this year than a year ago?

I can’t think of one.

The program is building. It’s no time to overreact. Stay the course, gain the experience needed, and add players to the program who can help you win.
