Texas Longhorns' Monday recruiting wrap

It’s been one hell of a Monday on the recruiting circuit. The Longhorns lost a commitment, added to their visitor list for Texas-TCU on Saturday, and might be on the cusp of a new pledge.

Anthony Hill Jr, LB, Denton (Texas) Ryan

The On3 Consensus’ No. 1 linebacker scheduled a trip to Austin for the Texas-TCU contest on Saturday. Then a few minutes later, he announced his decommittment from Texas A&M.

Hill Jr. still hears from Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Michigan among others, but those close to the On3 Consensus’ No. 18 overall recruit think UT might hold the quiet edge. Hill took his official to Austin in June, and was receiving text messages from Cooper and Arch Manning over the summer.

As for a decision, Hill likely wants to wait until national signing day in December. The Longhorn staff has been on Hill to make a return trip to the ATX and now they’re in business.

Colton Vasek, EDGE, Austin (Texas) Westlake – Oklahoma commit

The whispers of Vasek and Texas have turned into voices. The OU pledge has been a mainstay at Texas games this fall, including the Iowa State contest with Manning, Johntay Cook, and others from Texas’ class of 2023.

Vasek’s close friend, Ethan Burke, is a freshman at Texas and has flashed in his first season on the Forty. Seeing how Pete Kwaitkowski and the Horns defense is using Burke has been influential in the recruitment.

The Westlake-to-Texas pipeline looks to continually flow.

Jaden Greathouse, WR, Austin (Texas) Westlake – Notre Dame commit

Speaking of Westlake and pipelines, Greathouse is another prospect we’re monitoring for the Texas 2023 class. The Notre Dame pledge was supposed to take an unofficial to South Bend over the weekend to watch Notre Dame’s takedown of Clemson. He’s now set to see Texas-TCU from DKR on Saturday.

Texas and wide receivers coach Brennan Marion hasn’t let up a bit since Greathouse’s pledge to Notre Dame over the summer.

While a few of those close insist he’s solid to the Fighting Irish, there’s certainly some slack in this recruitment. Oklahoma and Clemson continue to communicate with the On3 four-star receiver as well.

Liona Lefau, LB, Kahuku (Hawaii) – #AllGasNoBrakes

The Horns linebacker pledge is returning to Austin this weekend for the Texas-TCU matchup. It’s good because schools continue to reach out to the On3 three-star from Hawaii.

At 6-foot-1, 211 pounds, the natural inside linebacker still hears from Oregon, USC, and Washington.

Jelani McDonald, ATH, Waco (Texas) Connally

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound On3 four-star recently reopened his recruitment when he de-committed from Oklahoma State. He’s now set to see Texas unofficially for a second time since his October offer. TCU and Ole Miss have joined Arkansas, Texas Tech, and SMU with offers for McDonald.

McDonald continues to build a strong relationship with Jeff Choate and the Texas staff. His multi-sport skills in basketball and track and field translate seamlessly on the gridiron.

McDonald currently doesn’t have a timetable for his next decision.

Jamel Johnson, DB, Arlington (Texas) Seguin

UT’s first pledge of the 2023 cycle decommitted this morning. The 6-foot-1, 174-pound On3 three-star holds offers from Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, and USC, but it appears Ole Miss might currently lead the charge for his services.

Johnson took multiple visits after his Texas commitment including Fayetteville, AR, and Oxford, MS, so it seems Johnson will be in the SEC by the time Texas enrolls in the Southeastern Conference.
