Texas Sports Hall of Fame to induct Longhorns RB Priest Holmes, track star Carlette Guidry

Former Texas running back Priest Holmes and track star Carlette Guidry will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Board of Directors of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced on Wednesday.

The new inductees for the Class of 2023 are: Robert Brazile, José Cruz, Scott Drew, Carlette Guidry-Falkquay, Adrian Peterson, Cynthia Potter, Michael Strahan, and Anthony “Priest” Holmes.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound running back from San Antonio (Texas) Marshall began his career as an all-state running back, where he notched 26 touchdowns and rushed for 2,031 yards in his senior year. Holmes also led his school to its first appearance in a state championship game, a 27-14 loss to Odessa Permian in 1991. 

Holmes finished his Longhorns tenure with 1,276 yards rushing (5.1 avg.) with 20 touchdowns on 252 carries. He bounced back in 1996 after sitting out the 1995 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, notching 324 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on 59 carries, the sixth-highest single-season TD total in school history as a senior in 1996. Holmes starred in the 1996 Big 12 Championship after rushing for 120 yards and three touchdowns over No. 3-ranked Nebraska.

Holmes earned MVP honors in the 1994 Sun Bowl with his 161-yard rushing and four-touchdown performance in the 35-31 victory over the Mack Brown-led North Carolina Tar Heels.

Holmes went on to a stellar professional career. In 1997, he began playing with the Baltimore Ravens and later joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2001. Holmes carved out an illustrious 10-year NFL run, where he became a Super Bowl XXXV Champion, three-time All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler, and NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2002. Holmes rushed for 8,035 yards and scored 86 touchdowns. In 2001, he became the second player in Chiefs history to lead the league in rushing (1,555 yards). 

Guidry, a Houston native, attended the Texas from 1988-1991. She accomplished many awards during her time at UT and became a 23-time All American, 12-time NCAA National Champion, 17-time SWC Champion and established four school records:  55m – 6.66 (1990); 60m – 7.14 (1991); 100m – 10.94 (1991); Sprint Medley Relay – 3:41.96 (1988).  Her accolades landed her a position on the SWC All-Decade Team, SWC Athlete of the Decade, the Babe Zaharias Award and Honda-Broderick Award honors  After her collegiate career, she went on to become a gold medalist at the 1992 & 1996 Olympic Games as a member of Team USA’s 400-meter relay team.
