Texas Basketball still has key roster spots to fill before the season tips off. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Tre Johnson’s NBA draft stock.

The Longhorns still lack guard depth, especially scoring and slashing guards. The frontcourt is stacked with players like Matas Vokietaitis, Dailyn Swain, and Lassina Triaore, and John Clark, while wings like Cam Heide and Simeon Wilcher provide decent rotation. However, the backcourt with Jordan Pope, Tramon Mark, and Chendall Weaver is thin and lacks offensive punch.

Tre Johnson impressed at the NBA Combine with a solid 6’4” height, 6’10” wingspan, and elite jump shooting (68% in drills). His measurables and performance suggest strong potential on both ends, despite concerns about his defense in college due to high offensive load and team misfit.

Initially projected as a top-three pick, Johnson is now expected to land between picks 5-9, with Utah Jazz or Washington Wizards being the most likely suitors. Both teams need offensive firepower and fit his profile as a high-volume scorer with potential to develop defensively.

Top picks are likely Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, with Ace Bailey potentially going third. VJ Edgecomb is another rising player considered for picks before Johnson. Team needs—such as guard depth or wing defenders—shape these choices.

Johnson could average 15+ points as a rookie on teams like Utah or Washington, where he’d have offensive freedom. These teams are seeking dynamic scorers to complement their current rosters. Johnson’s high ceiling as a 25 PPG scorer makes him a valuable pick.

Texas missed out on point guard Nyk Lewis (now at VCU) and still needs a passing-oriented guard. The transfer portal is thinning, making this a pressing concern.
