5 Things from USC 42, Arizona State 25

Player of the Game

The USC defense came alive in the second half, but all three selections for the Player of the Game came from the Trojans’ offense. One selection was an easy one, and probably someone who needed to put together a solid performance coming on the heels of last weekend’s game against Oregon State.

Play of the Game

From a jaw-dropping near-safety to a complete game catalog of top plays, to a small sample that would provide insight as to what was to come, there are far more than just three Plays of the Game selected.

Expectation Met

When things are tight at halftime during an expected blowout, has anything gone according to expectations? There’s unanimous agreement among the WeAreSC staff that something certainly has. Things haven’t gone perfectly for quarterback Caleb Williams this season. The sophomore threw his first interception of the season on a key redzone possession. That broke a streak of more than 200-straight pass attempts without an interception. But there has not been a player more fun to watch this season and Williams put on a show against the Sun Devils.

Surprise

One staffer points to the bench depth as a pleasant surprise, others point to the point spread and halftime score as a different kind of surprise.

Biggest Takeaway

What does this game mean for the Trojans moving forward? There are certainly positives and negatives that can be seen in every game. USC has a few major challenges coming up, including that trip to Utah looming on Oct. 15. Does this game tell us anything about what to expect then?
