The USC Trojans climbed two spots in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings following a 38-17 home win over the Northwestern Wildcats. USC now sits at No. 17 in the CFP rankings.

USC will have an opportunity to strengthen its resume this weekend as No. 21 Iowa visits the Coliseum.

USC was No. 19 last week and this marks the first time the Trojans have appeared in back-to-back rankings since the final two editions of the 2022 rankings when USC was No. 4 and No. 10.

USC was No. 20 in the first selection committee rankings of 2023 before dropping out and the Trojans did not appear in any of the six rankings last season.

The four conference champions from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC, along with the highest-ranked conference champion from the Group of Five are guaranteed a spot in the field, but those conference champs are no longer guaranteed a first-round bye. The remaining seven bids will be filled by seven at-large qualifiers.

Those who finish between 5-12 will participate in the first round. First round games will be hosted by the higher seed. The subsequent rounds will be played at traditional bowl sites.
