A daily three-point briefing recapping the news and notes of USC athletics. Today it’s updated On3 recruiting rankings, checking in on a couple of 5-star visitors and what went wrong against OSU.

Updated rankings

The On3 recruiting rankings for the class of 2022 were updated this morning. Two USC commits earned five-star rankings and both are regarded as top-10 prospects, in defensive end Mykel Williams (Columbus, Ga./Hardaway) and cornerback Domani Jackson (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei). Five of USC’s 10 commitments are among the top 300 players in the nation.

Intel on 5-star OL visitors

Saturday night did not wind up providing the ideal setting for USC to bring in dozens of recruits. But the coaches had some top targets on hand and had to push through the disappointment of the game. The Trojans must land several impact offensive linemen in this class and they are chasing some good ones, specifically five-star Devon Campbell (Arlington, Tex./Bowie) and high four-star Josh Conerly (Seattle/Rainier Beach). Both were on campus for unofficial visits over the weekend. WeAreSC’s Scott Schrader has notes on how those trips went, and what could be next.

USC issues against Oregon State

When looking for what USC struggled with against Oregon State, “Everything” is probably an acceptable answer. Monday night, head coach Donte Williams joined the Trojans Live radio show and got into some more specifics.

Williams said there were alignment issues on defense against wing sets and bunch sets, too many penalties on special teams, and the offense couldn’t sustain drives. He admitted the two teams that have given the USC defense trouble this season are more “pro-style” teams. Colorado, USC’s upcoming opponent, also falls in that pro-style offense category.

“We have to make sure in the trenches, that we’re able to battle and win in the trenches,” Williams said. “We better, and we will.”
