Juwan Gary is a 6-foot-6 forward, originally from Columbia, South Carolina. On April 6, the redshirt sophomore from Alabama entered the transfer portal. Gary wrote on his Instagram, “After these last two weeks of hard thinking…I have come to the conclusion of putting my name in the transfer portal and pursuing my basketball career somewhere else.”

Gary played 15.6 minutes per game last year and started in 16 games for the Crimson Tide. A quick look at Gary’s advanced metrics shows why fans and beat writers alike were calling for Gary to play more throughout the season.

Almost immediately after entering the transfer portal, phone calls came in. After a week of sifting through the calls, Gary is ready to begin taking visits.

Current visit schedule

South Carolina: April 15-17
Nebraska: April 18-19

Gary plans to take all five of his allotted official visits. He has a list of schools he is working through to set the final three. The exact schools and dates are not set yet, but Western Kentucky, DePaul, Wake Forest, and Ole Miss are the programs he is looking at.

In their words

Gary played his senior season for head coach Mike Wright at Charlotte (NC) Liberty Heights Athletic Institute.

“Juwan Gary is a high motor player who can defend all positions. He can also score the basketball at a high level. He is a great teammate; players love playing with Juwan,” Wright told On3.

Gary’s 2021-22 season

Gary averaged 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in 15.6 minutes per game. His per-40 numbers were 16.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks. Alabama won 10 of the 15 games Gary started, including games against Gonzaga, Houston, and Tennessee.

Gary mostly played the four for Alabama; he also played some minutes at the three, and, with injuries, he got a lot of time at the five.

“(Juwan) plays hard all the time. He has a great attitude and makes up for a lot with his energy, effort, and his athletic ability,” Alabama head coach Nate Oats said during media availability in January.

Gary was the 2019 On3 Consensus No. 78 ranked player.
