Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Marcus Washington announced he will be transferring to Nebraska. He’s the second player from Austin joining the Cornhuskers, with Washington linking back up with quarterback Casey Thompson.

Washington is one of a few Texas wide receivers to leave the program after head coach Steve Sarkisian’s first season in charge. Despite entering the transfer portal, Washington became a key part of the offense last season due to injuries at the position. He finished with 18 receptions for 277 yards and two touchdowns on the year.

Nebraska has hit the transfer portal hard this cycle, with Washington making 14 offseason additions for head coach Scott Frost. As the Cornhuskers are in desperate need of an offense upgrade for the 2022 season, Washington is the third transfer wide receiver of the cycle.

Nebraska lost its top two threats to the 2022 NFL Draft. Wide receiver Samori Toure and tight end Austin Allen are off to the next level. For an offense that already struggled, Frost has done a great job restructuring what should be a good product for the 2022 season.

In their nine losses last season, all but one was by one possession or less. Frost saw his offense continually struggle and averaged under 30 points per game. He is hoping with additions such as Washington, Nebraska will be able to help the defense out a bit more and see drastic improvement. The Big Ten West is considered open this year and the Cornhuskers will want to make a jump and Washington is being brought in to help the cause.

Washington was ranked a four-star prospect coming out of high school by the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting services. Originally from Saint Louis, he was the No. 2 player from his home state of Missouri. On a national level, Washington came in as the No. 25 wide receiver and No. 152 recruit in the 2019 class.

Had he been an original member of Nebraska’s 2019 class, Washington would have been the sixth highest-ranked player.

For Texas, Sarkisian has completely redone his wide receiver room. Five have left the program and already have found their destinations, while three new pass catchers will be on the roster this year. Tarique Milton was the latest to announce he would be a Longhorn, while Agiye Hall will be enrolling within the coming weeks. Isaiah Neyor went through spring practice and is expected to be a major contributor this season.
