Former North Carolina quarterback Tad Hudson has committed to Coastal Carolina out of the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on Instagram.

Hudson did not see any action in his true freshman season for the Tar Heels, and will have four years of eligibility remaining to play for Coastal Carolina.

Hudson was a three-star prospect out of William Amos Hough High School in Cornelius (NC), where he was ranked the No. 482 overall player and No. 30 quarterback in the country for the 2023 recruiting cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound pocket passer will look for a new program and a fresh start following just one lone season in Chapel Hill. Boasting a 33-5 record as a high school starting quarterback where he threw for a school record 7,325 yards and 76 touchdowns in his prep career.

Coastal Carolina finished the 2023 college football season with an 8-5 record which was capped with a Holiday Bowl victory over San Diego State under first-year head coach Tim Beck last year.

Mack Brown calls UNC’s quarterback battle a blessing

This offseason, North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown is looking for a new quarterback as the team moves on from Drake Maye.

For Brown, this is going to be a challenge. However, he also feels that it’s been a blessing because of how the quarterback room has handled it to this point.

“You start looking at quarterbacks, which is always a fan favorite to coach and talk about,” Mack Brown said. “Everybody loves that quarterback battle. We’re lucky that we feel like, and this will sound like it’s a press conference statement, but we feel like both of them can play today. That’s a blessing. We feel like both of them can win today.”

As of now, North Carolina has four quarterbacks listed on its roster, including Conner HarrellMax JohnsonDJ Mazzone, and Michael Merdinger. The quarterback battle appears to be between Harrell, who was on the team last season, and Johnson, who transferred in after stops at LSU and Texas A&M.
