SEC announces 2024 baseball awards

In less than 24 hours, the SEC baseball tournament will be underway from Hoover, with some of the country’s best teams all competing. Just one will be remaining come Sunday afternoon, hopefully riding high into the NCAA Tournament.

Before the action begins though, the SEC released awards for the 2024 regular season. First and second All-SEC teams were released, alongside freshman and defensive standouts. Additionally, five individual honors were given.

2024 SEC Baseball Awards

Player of the Year: Charlie Condon, Georgia

Condon burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman last season with Georgia after playing his first year of college baseball at the JUCO level. But his game was elevated to a different level in 2024, earning Player of the Year honors.

In 53 games played, Condon recorded 35 home runs and 75 RBIs. He led the SEC in total hits, runs, scored, home runs, and total bases. Arguably the most eye-popping number was an OPS of 1.630. Not too many compare to what the Georgia product was able to produce.

Pitcher of the Year: Hagen Smith, Arkansas

We may only be a year removed from Paul Skenes but if you are being compared to the now-Pittsburgh Pirate, something is going well. Smith was dominant for Arkansas this season and is shaping up to be a high draft pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

In 14 games started this season, Smith had an ERA of 1.52 in 77 IP. Just 13 earned runs crossed the plate with the Arkansas ace out there. Even more impressive, his K/BB ration was over 5/1 with 150 total strikeouts and just 29 walks.

Freshman of the Year: Gavin Grahovac, Texas A&M

D1 Baseball named Grahovac the SEC Preseason Freshman of the Year and he delivered on expectations, being named to the award on Monday. Grahovac elevated the Texas A&M lineup and had the Aggies as the No. 1 overall team in the country for quite some time.

A total of 54 games played resulted in an average of .322 with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs. Striking out 74 times was not the best but Grahovac still got on base nearly 42% of his at-bats, being as productive as anybody in the SEC.

Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Drew Beam, Tennessee

An award with more than baseball to it, Beam was honored for excelling in the classroom as well. Beam finished with a 3.47 GPA as a finance major according to the SEC’s release.

He’s not too bad on the mound either, having eight SEC wins this season, good enough for fourth in the conference. A standout on the diamond and among his fellow classmates in Knoxville.

Coach of the Year: Nick Mingione, Kentucky

Kentucky was not too highly thought of entering the season, predicted to finish fifth in the East and 10th overall in the SEC. Mingione did more than exceed expectations, putting the Wildcats in a position to win the conference on the final weekend of the season.

A double-bye was earned by Kentucky at the SEC Tournament, not playing until Wednesday. Something you earn after going 22-8 in college baseball’s best conference.
