Drew Stevens named to Groza Award Watch List
It’s watch list season in college football and Iowa’s placekicker got his first taste of it on Wednesday. Hawkeye field goal kicker Drew Stevens was named the Lou Groza Award Watch list heading into the 2023 season.
The award is named after former Ohio State and Cleveland Brown kicker Lou Groza. It is presented annually to the top placekicker in college football. Back in 2002, former Iowa Hawkeye Nate Kaeding won the award.
In his first year with the Hawkeyes, Stevens made 16 of 18 field goals, including a long of 54 yards. The 16 made field goals was an Iowa record for a true freshman. He also made 24 of 24 point after touchdowns. Last year, he was named second team All Big Ten by the media, Associated Press, and Phil Steele. Last year he was also one of two freshmen to be a semifinalist for the Groza Award.
Heading into this season, Stevens is at the top of the Iowa depth chart. He is also preseason first team All Big Ten according to Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. Stevens, who is from North Augusta, SC, was a walk-on in his first year at Iowa, but is now a scholarship player.
