When Minnesota guard Elijah Hawkins entered his name into the transfer portal on April 22, Kentucky was among a dozen different schools to reach out. But over a week later, the rising senior has decided to move to the Big 12.

According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Hawkins committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Tuesday. Tipton adds that Kentucky was the runner-up in this recruitment. Hawkins was originally expected to visit Lexington sometime this week, but a trip to Texas Tech over the weekend locked him down.

Considered one of the nation’s best passers, Hawkins averaged 9.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 3.6 rebounds last season at Minnesota. The 5-foot-11 floor general began his career at Howard, spending two years with the Bison before transferring to the Golden Gophers last offseason.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kentucky and head coach Mark Pope picked up a surprise commitment from Oklahoma State transfer center Brandon Garrison. Additionally, Dayton transfer guard Koby Brea began an official visit with the Wildcats on Monday while Utah State transfer forward Great Osobor did the same on Sunday.

Kentucky might have missed out on Hawkins, but there are plenty of talented targets still available.
