Former North Carolina cornerback Lejond Cavazos has committed to Michigan State, according to Spartan Mag’s Jim Comparoni.

Cavazos commits to the Spartans following an official visit over the weekend in East Lansing, joining Michigan State ahead of his final season of eligibility after spending time at Ohio State and North Carolina during his college career.

After redshirting in his first season with the Buckeyes, Cavazos appeared in 11 games during the 2021 season as a redshirt freshman. Racking up eight tackles and two pass breakups on the year before entering the transfer portal and transferring to UNC.

In year one with the Tar Heels Cavazos played in 11 games and started the final three games of the season for North Carolina, ending the 2022 season with a career-high 18 tackles, two pass breakups, and a tackle for loss. Posting a career-high five tackles and the first tackle for loss in his career in the ACC Championship game versus Clemson.

Cavazos appeared in just one game last season for North Carolina against Syracuse after battling injury throughout the year. As he’ll look to bounce back fully healthy and make an impact for Michigan State in the last season of his college career and the first season at the helm for head coach Jonathan Smith.

Cavazos played high school football at IMG Academy in Bradenton (FL), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 359 overall recruit and the No. 28 ranked safety in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

But after entering the NCAA transfer portal this offseason, Cavazos was a three-star college prospect ranked as the No. 1,147 overall player and the No. 186 cornerback available in the portal this offseason according to On3’s College Football Transfer Portal Top Player Rankings.

At 6-feet tall, 200 pounds, Cavazos provides veteran experience and versatility for Michigan State’s back end after flashing the ability to play cornerback and safety throughout his college career. Bolstering up the Spartans’ secondary and representing the 18th player to join Michigan State this offseason through the transfer portal.
