Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix enjoyed being contacted by NFL legend John Elway after being drafted by the team. While speaking to reporters during Broncos’ rookie minicamp this past weekend, Nix talked about Elway reaching out to him.

“That was a cool text for sure,” Nix said. “Made my dad a little mad I think because that was his favorite growing up, so he was a little jealous. But it was awesome and it was kind of like ‘Wow is this really happening?’ When you’re in a special city like that, everybody supports the next generation, so that’s one thing I took from that.”

Nix is hoping to have the same success as Elway who was the Broncos quarterback from 1983 to 1998. During his time in Denver, Elway led the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances and won two of them. He was named MVP of Super Bowl XXXIII, won the NFL MVP award in 1987 and was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times.

Elway also had success as a front-office executive for the Broncos. He was the team’s general manager from 2011 to 2020 and helped the Broncos win the Super Bowl during the 2015 season. Elway and former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak are the only individuals to be associated with three of the Broncos’ Super Bowl wins.

Bo Nix is ready to show the Broncos what he can do

Nix is expected to be the Broncos’ next franchise quarterback as he was selected No. 12 overall last month. During his press conference, Nix, who played college football at Auburn and Oregon, shared his goals during his time in Denver.

“I don’t want to just be a draft pick,” Nix said, per the team’s official website. “I want to be able to show my improvements and show that I can do what [they] picked me to do, and that’s to go out there and help win games [and] do whatever I can to put his team in a better situation.”

Nix also shared his excitement about working with head coach Sean Payton. “I grew up watching Drew Brees,” he said. “I grew up watching Coach Payton coach. I watched their Super Bowl. I knew the efficient offenses that they had and how well they worked together and honestly, in college, you learn — you’re with so many different coaches — that relationship is so important. It’s one that every quarterback and play caller and head coach need to have together. I’m excited to be around him.
