Two Notre Dame defensive linemen have changed numbers, according to the team’s official roster. Sophomore Vyper Boubacar Traore was No. 51 and is now No. 5, while sophomore defensive tackle Armel Mukam was No. 93 and is now No. 88.

Traore will share No. 5 with sophomore wide receiver Jordan Faison. It was last worn on defense by cornerback Cam Hart in 2023. Mukam will share No. 88 with senior tight end Mitchell Evans, and he is the first defensive No. 88 on the Irish since at least 2005.

After playing in five games last season, Traore is expected to be a key situational pass rusher for the Irish. He flashed on tape as a freshman, strip-sacking USC quarterback and eventual No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams on Oct. 14.

Traore’s glimpses of pass-rush dominance got more consistent during spring practice. He picked up a sack in the Blue-Gold Game and recovered a fumble, and he was constantly in the backfield during Notre Dame’s “jersey scrimmage” on April 13.

Mukam redshirted as a freshman, playing in only one game. He missed all of spring ball with a torn labrum.

Quote of the day

“Absolutely. Absolutely. Not to be cocky, but we have a lot of talent. Women’s basketball in general has a lot of talent. You can find it all over. But we have a lot of injuries coming back and transfers, especially players like Olivia Miles coming back. A lot of people might have forgotten, but she’s going to come back and shock the world with the talent she has. Emma RischCassandre Prosper. We just have so much firepower coming back. It’s going to be exciting.”
