Dylan Campbell named 2023 team MVP, other Texas baseball program honors announced

Texas baseball head coach David Pierce announced the recipients of the program’s six postseason awards on Thursday, with Dylan Campbell taking home team MVP honors.

The awards were instituted by Pierce after his first season in 2017 and were named after several of the Longhorn baseball program’s greatest players.

Brooks Kieschnick Team MVP

2023 recipient: Dylan Campbell

Campbell, a junior out of Houston (Texas) Strake Jesuit, hit .339 with 13 homers, 50 RBI, and 19 doubles along with 26 stolen bases and 65 runs scored. He recorded a Texas and Big 12 record 38-game hitting streak in 2023, and was a first-team All-Big 12 honoree.

He was named a third-team All-American by the NCBWA and Baseball America. Campbell recently signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after he was selected with the 136th overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft.

Keith Moreland Offensive Player of the Year

2023 recipient: Porter Brown

Brown, a transfer from TCU, hit .323 and started all 64 games in left field for the Longhorns. He had 76 hits and slugged 12 homers along with 59 RBI. He slashed .323/.426/.545 (AVG/OBP/SLG) during his first season on the Forty Acres. Brown was a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection.

Spike Owen Defensive Player of the Year

2023 recipient: Dylan Campbell

Campbell posted a 1.000 fielding percentage and recorded eight assists this season.

Greg Swindell Pitcher of the Year

2023 recipient: Lucas Gordon

Gordon, a first-team All-American per Collegiate Baseball, a second-team All-American according to D1Baseball, the ABCA, Baseball America, and the NCWBA, and a third-team All-American per Perfect Game, was the Big 12 pitcher of the year in 2023. He was 7-2 with a 2.63 ERA, and struck out 103 batters in 102.2 innings.

Gordon recently signed with the Chicago White Sox after his selection in the sixth round of the 2023 draft.

James and Huston Street Longhorn Award

2023 recipient: Eric Kennedy

Kennedy hit .306 in 63 games for the Longhorns, posting a career best 57 hits, 17 home runs, and 47 RBI during his fifth season of eligibility. He slashed .306/.378/.588 in 2023 and knocked 14 doubles.

Sean Braswell Academic MVP

2023 recipient: Zane Morehouse

Morehouse, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed reliever who majored in health promotion and behavioral sciences, was 4-3 with seven saves and a 5.21 ERA in 28 appearances for the Longhorns in 2023. He was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the 14th round of the 2023 draft and recently signed his contract.
