Lucas Gordon, Dylan Campbell named NCBWA All-Americans

Lucas Gordon and Dylan Campbell were named All-Americans by the National College Baseball Writers Association, the organization announced Wednesday. Gordon was named a second-team All-American while Campbell was given third-team honors.

Both Gordon and Campbell were first-team All-Big 12 selections, with Gordon also picking up Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors.

Gordon was 7-2 on the season with a 2.63 ERA in 19 appearances, 17 of them starts. He allowed 85 hits and 34 walks in 102.2 innings pitched. He struck out 103 and limited opponents to a .226 batting average.

Campbell slashed .339/.436/.603 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in 64 games. He posted 82 hits with 19 doubles, three triples, and 13 home runs. Campbell walked 39 times, drove in 50, and was 26-of-29 on the basepaths. Campbell tallied a 38-game hitting streak, breaking the Texas program record of 25 and the Big 12 record of 35. Campbell posted eight outfield assists and was not charged with an error during the 2023 campaign.

Texas has boasted at least one All-American player in every season since 2020. Bryce Elder took home second-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball for his performance in the COVID-19 shortened season. In 2021, Ty Madden was a first-team All-American according to several outlets.

Ivan Melendez took home unanimous national player of the year and first-team All-America honors, the Dick Howser Trophy, and Texas’ first-ever Golden Spikes Award in 2022. Outfielder Murphy Stehly and starting pitcher Pete Hansen were named second-team All-Americans along with Melendez.

Texas saw its 2023 campaign end in the Stanford super regional on Monday with a loss in Game 3 to the Cardinal. The Longhorns completed the season, the program’s seventh under head coach David Pierce, 42-22 and 15-9 in the Big 12. UT took home its third Big 12 regular season title of the Pierce era and earned the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament. Texas swept through the Coral Gables regional before falling in the round of 16.
