South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer has named LaNorris Sellers the starting quarterback coming out of spring practice. The announcement was made on Monday night while the head coach was speaking on the Florence Welcome Home Tour.

Beamer made sure to state competition is still open across the roster, including quarterback. Auburn transfer Robby Ashford was one the competing against Sellers for the starting spot.

But for now, he plans on Sellers being the guy for South Carolina’s season opener against Old Dominion.

“I’ll tell you guys what I told LaNorris and all the quarterbacks coming out of spring practice. ‘Coming out of spring practice, LaNorris (Sellers) is our starting quarterback,’” Beamer said via On3’s Gamecock Central. “But, just like all of our positions, we’ll continue to compete at all positions.”

“So, I told Robby Ashford, the moment that I say that at a Gamecock Club event, the headline’s going to be, ‘Beamer names LaNorris Sellers starting quarterback.’ LaNorris is the starting quarterback coming out of spring, but like I told LaNorris and like I told Robby, Robby did a great job during spring practice along with our other quarterbacks. LaNorris did a great job and I expect LaNorris to continue to compete and earn that position as well.”

There is still a ton of time between now and Aug. 31. Ashford can continue to compete and attempt to overtake Sellers during summer workouts and when fall practice begins in Columbia. He left Auburn in hopes of winning a starting spot elsewhere after falling behind Peyton Thorne.

Sellers has earned the job out of spring practice, though — giving Beamer enough confidence to go public with the news at the Florence Welcome Home Tour.

More on LaNorris Sellers, second season in South Carolina program

Spencer Rattler was always going to be South Carolina’s starter last season. But from the moment Sellers stepped on campus, the buzz around him instantly began. He was a late recruiting flip after previously being committed to Syracuse.

Sellers played high school football at Florence (SC) South Florence, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 355 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3 was higher on Sellers than the rest of the industry, ranking him as the No. 95 overall player in the class. Sellers was also the No. 8 quarterback and No. 2 player in the state of South Carolina per the On300.
