Oklahoma vs. Texas baseball enters weather delay

Sunday evening’s baseball game between Oklahoma and Texas has entered a weather delay after lightning was spotted within eight miles of L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman. The Longhorns led 12-10 at the time in the top of the eighth inning.

The matchup is the back end of a doubleheader after Texas won the first game of the day 8-6. OU claimed the opening contest on Friday evening so the winner is set to take the series.

Per NCAA rules, the game will be delayed at least 30 minutes. It cannot resume until it has been 20 minutes since the last time that lightning was detected within eight miles of the stadium.

Texas opened up the game with a 6-1 lead before Oklahoma scored four runs in the bottom of the third to come back within one run. The Longhorns have still yet to give up their lead to this point despite the Sooners staying within striking distance. Texas will have a runner on first with no outs when play resumes.

It’s been quite the evening for the Longhorns bats as all but one of their runs scored have come off of home runs. Texas has gone yard a total of six times in this game alone after hitting two homers in the first game of the day. Both teams have combined for a total of 29 hits through the first seven innings.

Max Belyeu leads Texas with two home runs in the game. He is a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate thus far with three RBI and a pair of singles.

Big 12 calls baseball game between Oklahoma and Texas

Ultimately, the decision was made to call the contest after lightning was detected at 9:42 p.m. CT. Sooners play-by-play man Toby Rowland reported that Big 12 rules stated the game had to resume by 10 p.m. to be allowed to finish.

Texas entered Sunday down 1-0 in the series against Oklahoma but went on to win 8-6 in the first game of a doubleheader. Now it has been awarded the victory in the rubber match. The Longhorns improved to 27-18 (13-8) Big 12 with the win against the Sooners.

The Longhorns will next move on to face Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday before entering a three-game series against Oklahoma State on Friday. As for Oklahoma, its next matchup will come on the road against Oral Roberts at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday.
