KSR Today: The Longines Kentucky Oaks 150

Jack PIlgrimby:Jack Pilgrim05/03/24

There is plenty to be proud of as homegrown Kentuckians, this beautiful state taking pride in three things better than anyone else in the world: basketball, bourbon and horses.

This weekend in particular is the proudest, when all eyes around the world turn to Churchill Downs in Louisville for not only the most exciting two minutes in sports, but the days leading up to and including — Thurby, Oaks and Derby with a heavy emphasis internationally on the latter pair.

Friday marks the 150th running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks, America’s premier and most lucrative race for 3-year old fillies. The 1 1/8-mile dirt race comes with a $1.5 million purse and the honor of sporting the garland of lilies, an annual tradition dating back to 1875. It’s the second-highest attended horse race in the United States, a holiday for folks around the state with locals getting school off to celebrate (and so teachers can play hooky and drink all day in the infield).

What do you need to know about the Oaks field in the hours leading up to the big race? What is the schedule leading up to and following race No. 11 at Churchill Downs? That’s where we’re starting today on KSR.
