Please use this thread for all pre-Session 3, in-Session 3, and post-Session 3 discussions.

When: March 18, 11 am EDT

Where: Little Caesars Arena; Detroit, MI

TV: ESPNU, if that's part of your cable package.

Streaming: EPSN3.com (I believe you have to have ESPN as part of your cable package). If not, check out the ESPN app. Note: you can control the mat/match you watch with this.

Radio: The radio PBP with Jeff Byers will be streamed for free via LionVision. The pre-Session will start at 10:40 am EDT, with the competition at 11 am EDT. You can access the radio PBP at:

Live Brackets: You can follow the brackets on TrackWrestling at:

https://www.trackwrestling.com/Login.jsp?TIM=1647476933977&twSessionId=ddzxuhdeku

Note: The Penn State Wrestling Club also has live brackets at: https://www.pennstatewrestlingclub.org

Team Scoring: The Penn State Wrestling Club is usually the fastest with that info. Their team scoring information can be found at: https://www.pennstatewrestlingclub.org/content/tournament_team_score.php?id=27&type=team

PBP: I'll provide PBP. I have something else to deal with in the morning, so I probably won't be in the thread until right around 11 am. I encourage everyone to participate in discussing each match, providing your insight, asking your questions, and expressing your frustration with a move, with a ref's decision, with the outcome, etc. @GregPickel will also be providing information. We all could use help with mat assignments for upcoming PSU bouts (usually available from the TrackWrestling link listed above, or the Penn State Wrestling twitter account). Collectively, we've made this work for everyone in the past, and I'm sure we'll do the same this year.

UNI and Oregon State are easy to cheer for. Good for both programs.

but yeah, the Tournament is electric. Nittany Lions putting on a show. My fantasy team in a 7-person league is just shitting the bed.

hopefully I’m hammered and posting Scott Hall (RIP) gifs on Saturday night. Saw a tweet about cael loving the boo birds or something last night. Every team is different than the previous. Fun to see how different personalities and skills change the gameplan over the years.

Still curious why Cael has only been in the corner like 3 times. Cody and Jimmy take the light weights I guess. I did see Cael 1 match watching from the tunnel.

So if I understand tournament scoring correctly there's a minimum of 1.5 points available for us in the consolations, with any bonus points scored in full. Those points are critical in the team race with Meat having seven in the quarter finals. Go State!

Still can't believe Lance beat Hendrickson. I watched the Big 12 championships and Hendrickson looked incredibly athletic, well conditioned and really creative for a HWT. Hopefully Schultz beats Parris, that will take another Wolverine out of the winner's bracket. I know ASU is right behind us on the scoreboard, but they only have 5 in the winners' brackets to the Wolverines' 7.

As usual, lots of great storylines and match-ups, plus it's easy to find other wrestlers to cheer for when our Nits aren't on the mat.

Here's to hoping we take command of this thing by the end of the day! WE ARE!...

Hey can you or anyone help me understand team scoring. PSU up on Mi by 6.5 pts at this point. The max for each team per psuwrestling club is 245+238, a diff of 7.0. Each team has 9 alive and they have 7 and 2 vs our 6 and 3. So how does the max point potential increase to our advantage, when they have the advantage of one more in the winners bracket?

From Pistols Firing, Okie States site:
There are three ways to score points for your team. Placement points, advancement points, and bonus points.

Placement Points

  • 1st place: 16 points
  • 2nd place: 12 points
  • 3rd place: 10 points
  • 4th place: 9 points
  • 5th place: 7 points
  • 6th place: 6 points
  • 7th place: 4 points
  • 8th place: 3 points
Pretty straightforward. You place first, you get 16 points. You place 9th, you get nothing.

Advancement Points

  • Each advancement in championship bracket: 1 point
  • Each advancement in consolation bracket: 0.5 point

Bonus Points

  • Each fall, forfeit, default, disqualification: 2 points
  • Each tech fall (w/ near fall points): 1.5 points
  • Each tech fall (w/o near fall points): 1 point
  • Each major decision: 1 point
Take RBY last night. He got 1 point for the win, but 2 additional points for the pin. Anybody want to triple your money......

Penn State has traditionally had guys who would go on to win a National Championships but score a boatload of points along the way. Just our 13.5 bonus points so far puts us tied with Northwestern and Oregon State. Without them, we are tied with Nebraska for 7th. You just don't decide to be a point scorer at the NCAA's......it has to be part of your routine. You also have to have confidence in your conditioning so you go out looking to let things fly and not worry about saving yourself for a later match.

Follow the scoring on the PSU Wrestling Club site............

Hope this helps

Some big time matches for Penn State on the bottom side this session. I know we all want 3/3 but would we take 2/3? How bad would 0fer or 1/3 be?

Max includes all possible advancement, placement, and bonus scoring. Michigan has more possible placement points due to more wrestlers in quarters, but PSU has more possible bonus due to more wrestlers in the consis who can possible wrestle more matches.

Anyone know how quickly ESPN+ puts these recordings on demand? Won't be able to watch at work, but would like to watch everything as though it were live (octo-box not ESPNU which won't show the consi's I imagine) when I get home.

ESPN live looks different this morning. Something called matcast and then mats 2,3,6 and 8. Yesterday it was all mats separately.

Great action and pace from Hildebrandt so far.

Suriano just picked up a big pin for Michigan in the team race.

Looks like they are holding quarters matches until the entire weight class is ready. Could be wrong but after Suriano pin RBY is just hanging on the bench with Cael.

125 Consolation R2: #16 seed Drew Hildebrandt vs. #15 seed Brody Teske (UNI)

The past and the current

Per 1:
Teske with a semi shot, nothing. Nothing thru 1 min. Testke with a low single to a double for a TD, 0-2. OOB with 1:19 left. Drew to his feet, nearly gets a reversal but only gets the esc, 1-2. Drew on a counter, nothing. Teske gets an ankle then elevates and gets the TD, 1-4. End. RT @ 1:00 for Testke

Per 2
Teske defers and Drew takes bottom. He's up quickly and out in 5 sec, 2-4. Drew in on a low single, Teske sprawls, and a stalemate with 1:20 left. Drew drives in on a double for the TD, 4-4. They are on the edge, and OOB with 45 sec. Testke to his feet, Drew tries to trip him but Teske is out, 4-5. RT is 37 sec for Teske. Lot of hand fighting. End. RT @ 37 sec for Teske

Per 3
Teske takes bottom. Teske to his feet, returned, then to his feet and out, 4-6. RT not a factor. Drew reaches for an ankle, nothing. Drew with another shot, blocked. Stalemate with 43 sec. Drew reaches, and reaches again. Shoots again and a stall warning on Teske. Teske with a double TD on the edge at the buzzer makes it a 4-8 DEC
