About that legendary SEC "boost"

Prior joining the SEC, we carried a .504 all-time win percentage. Since joining the SEC boast a staggering .523 win percentage. (based on some quick, maybe sloppy, math and disregarding ties)

Statistically insignificant.

Also irrelevant. Difficulty of schedule is much higher. But our success or lack of it is more on our coaches and players. The quality of our players is improving. A better comparison would be revenue. Dramatically higher.

lol, can't have it both ways. If coming to the SEC supposedly gives a winning boost, you can't explain away the absence of such a boost by saying it's harder to play in the SEC. Either it exists or doesn't. Besides, if your rationale is that the "boost" is offset by the increased difficulty, then that would have to apply to any other team joining the conference. Either way, it's a moot point. Either there is no boost or the boost is negated.

I would rather be recruiting as an SEC team than an ACC team (or any other conference for that matter)!
Ask UPC and Fla St about the revenue difference, they will tell ya?

That SEC boost is about to be turbocharged, which is exactly why CU and FSU are all of a sudden making noise about leaving.

The writing is on the wall...a very large and impactful windfall is forthcoming.

The boost is the recruiting advantage and increased revenue.
I’ve learned that Carolina plays to the level of their competition. If we played in the SoCon or Sunbelt, we would not go undefeated.
Might as well play with the best in the SEC and steal a few major victories along the way.

30 years of data on our side shows there's not much impact.

A lot of our fans seem to be in that mid-40s age range where things that happened in the 90s seems pretty recent. But then you stop and realize it was 30 years ago. We have fans who seem to be under the impression that we're still relatively new the SEC and are just now starting to see the results. We're not. We've been in for 30 years, and that 30 years has, for the most part, mirrored all our years prior the SEC. Mostly mediocre. Sometimes bad. Every now and again pretty good.

We have lacked necessary leadership to manage such an increase in funding. It took HBC showing up in 2005 to start any meaningful facility upgrades. At that point we were light years behind our competition in the SEC. But hey, we had a big stadium and we showed up to games even when we sucked. YAY! I really credit Eric Hyman a lot for being a disruptor. We had gone along to get along for way too long.

That's some pretty awful leadership if, in 30 seasons, we have been unable to turn that magical SEC boost into a noticeable change in the on-field product.

Our fans: If Clemson joins they'll instantly be granted magical football superpowers that renders them invincible!

Also our fans: Well, here's all the reasons why we're still mediocre 30 years after joining the SEC.

I would rather be mediocre as you state in the best conference than be mediocre in the ACC. Surely you can see the difference even though the results are about the same.
I see no difference. Mediocrity shouldn't be accepted at ANY level. "I would rather be mediocre..." is something that should never be said. I don't care what the comparison is. Mediocre shouldn't be an option.

It made me puke to hear William P Muschamp talk about the "unique challenges" at USC. What did HBC say?? "Why not us??" What does Beamer say? "We've got all we need to win championships". To me, there's no difference in being mediocre in the SOCON and mediocre in SEC. You still suck, and there's not much to be excited about. Congrats on the payday I guess...somebody is making a boatload off of a mediocre product.

The 90’s were rough but it took a solid 12 years in the SEC to start seeing a difference.
Things that have happened since 2004 (12 years after joining the SEC) that had not happened before:
- regularly competing with every SEC team in football. Tennessee and Florida were guaranteed L’s from 93-04
- regularly playing in and winning bowl games
- frequent top 25 rankings in football (I know the mschamp years sucked!)
- 2 basketball NIT championships
- 1 Men’s Final Four

Also all of our facilities are light years ahead of where they were even in 2005. Especially football and baseball

Typically the reason for failed organizations is poor leadership. I've never said Clem would magically turn into some superpower. All I'm saying is we spent 13 years in the SEC collecting that check before we started making significant facilities upgrades. Why?? There was an arms race going on in the SEC, and we just sat there cashing a check hiring guys like Brad Scott and Sparky Woods. The Holtz/HBC hires were great. But again, nothing facilities wise going on under Holtz. Wasn't until HBC came on until that started. HBC was clearly checked out 2 years before he quit mid season. Then we hire a guy that couldn't win at a place that had won 2 NCs within the last decade. So yeah, I'd agree we've had some pretty awful leadership.

What happened is in 2005 we hired a winner. I remember reading about how shocked he was that our facilities were that bad. Any even still, he said "why not us?". Even still he said "don't cheer for us when we lose". I hate the way he left, and a part of me will never forgive him for it. But the man introduced something to USC that we hadn't seen in a very, very long time....HOPE.

The delta in the conference payouts will really become drastic in the next few years. This past year SC's Athletic Dept. Revenue was $137.1MM and Clemson's was $122.3MM a $14.8MM delta. The gap has typically been $10MM or less. It will only continue to widen and Clemson knows it is a huge competitive disadvantage.

Thanks for quantifying the situation so clearly. The teams in the ACC simply cannot compete with the growing variance in payouts. This is precisely why CU and FSU want out. And this is precisely why we should not let them in. It's really pretty simple.

You said it led to a boost in winning. I say it led to a dramatic boost in revenue and that will only increase. Such a revenue increase is a huge deal. It is up to the university to use it properly by selecting the right coaches and spending appropriately on facilities. The fact is that without the sec money and cachet we would be highly irrelevant forever. And even good decisions by the university would not have a large impact due to the lack resources and importance.

Kentucky, Mis. St.,, Ole Miss, and some other schools have ben in the SEC for longer than us and struggle to get out of the mid tier level with the exception of a few years.

Surely, we must be the only fans of any program in the SEC that have these discussions every now and then. We are in the premier athletic conference in the country. What else is there to discuss? Nobody goes to Disney World and spends their time wondering if they should have gone to Carowinds.

Hyman had the plans drawn up....which was a big step. The building really didn't start until the new baseball stadium and the Dodie where Mrs. Anderson simply asked what the HBC wanted. After that it was Tanner's responsibility to cajole private donors to give the seed money and then go to the legislature to increase our cap on deficit spending for athletic facilities. The increased SEC money simply allows us to service the long term debt financing from the issuance of state bonds. Unlike many other states, SC has a cap on financing athletic facilities and getting the legislature to increase that cap is no small task.

Said it since joining the SEC & I'll say it until I'm in the grave.............we're an ACC school playing in the SEC.
And vice versa for Georgia Tech.

Is there a specific sport to which the winning percentage applies, or is that across all sports?

What if you went to Disney and didn’t get to ride anything. And was left thinking if you had gone to Carowinds you would’ve gotten to ride stuff.

It’s really simple… I had season tickets for 30 years and I can tell you it’s much nicer and more fun to know you’re going to have Georgia or Florida or Tennessee or Alabama or LSU or Auburn or Tamu or KY or Ole Miss or Miss St or Arkansas for a home game VS Duke, GT, Wake, BC, Syracuse, UVA,Louisville, etc.

I still don’t know how in the hell Clemson fans get remotely excited about their home games. They may get one decent exciting draw other than us.

They don't. They try and watch us play, hoping we'll lose. They get up for Florida State and maybe a non conference Notre Dame game but they'll admit that their schedule is about as exciting as the WAC.

Exactly. Frame the question about an SEC boost that you define as more wins and dare someone to show you are wrong. The record is known. The revenue is known also. No sane AD would leave the SEC. Bringing in more teams may dilute it though.

We have been in the SEC longer than we were in the ACC. Look if you want to be treated and screwed like we were in the ACC that is your right. My viewpoint is we are an SEC school and that is where we are belong and will never go back to the ACC. That my friend is not my opinion but it is a fact.

We screwed ourselves vis a vis the ACC, Notwithstanding the foolish decision to leave almost 52 years ago, of course we're not going back. That ship sailed in 1990. Not a fact, but an opinion shared by well over 99% of the universe.

Geographically, we are an ACC school - at least the initial ACC footprint until they poached the Big East. Demographically, we're an SEC school.

And Georgia Tech is just the opposite - Geographically an SEC school, and demographically an ACC institution.
