This is connected to my other thread about the north and south. I'm a geography/history buff and would like to hear your thoughts.

Leave sports teams / hated schools within the states out of it. Rank your neighbor states more on the people, scenery, attractions, enjoyment traveling through, etc. favorite to least favorite. Include all the states Kentucky shares a border with.

For my home state of Tennessee, I'd go with...

1. North Carolina
2. Virginia
3. Georgia
4. Kentucky
5. Alabama
6. Mississippi
7. Arkansas
8. Missouri

1) Tennessee - I grew up in Claiborne Co and love East Tn
2) North Carolina - for the part that's near east Tennessee

the rest can pretty much go straight to hell
(or the Big 10)

All states surrounding Kentucky are in the running for the remake of Deliverance. Thanks, but no thanks

1.) Virginia- the history, mountains and beaches
2.) Tennessee- west tn is ugly but the topography of central and east Tennessee is pretty, Nashville's a great town, lots of music and civil war history if that's your thing
3.) Ohio- Cincinnati is right there at the doorstep. Great memories of going to Reds games, Kings Island. It sounds lame but going back to when I was a kid, the sight of out of nowhere seeing the Cincy skyline when you come around the corner and down the hill of I71-75 is a little, insignificant thing that makes me still smile.
4. ) Tie- Illinois and Missouri- Illinois is flat and ugly but it does have a mega-city with almost everything to do, Missouri has the Ozarks and two big cities in St. Louis and KC but I'd rather go to Nashville or Cincinnati.
5.) West Virginia- Beautiful scenery but just overwhelming sense of despair and poverty
6.) Indiana- Get 10 miles past the Ohio River and it's flat as a pancake, ugliest state in the Union. What little sliver of the Great Lakes it has, there sits Gary. A very odd, inbred sort of folk that aren't necessarily unfriendly but make you feel a little uneasy. Indianapolis is a "planned city" because it's in the middle of the state, not because God and nature created it with rivers like Louisville or Cincinnati, or oceans like NYC or SanFran or geographic necessity like Atlanta where it's ideal as a crossroads because it's where the coastal plains and Appalachian hill country meet. There's just nothing there.

We share #3. The old Kings Island..pre Paramount had tons of local character. Cincinnatis skyline is phenomenal too due to the surrounding hills.
Speaking of 71-75..the old "Death Hill" unveiled a cool view of Cincinnati. The way the road was angled, the city would appear sideways.

1. Ohio - Spent a lot of time in Cincy as a kid between Reds games at Riverfront Stadium and Kings Island. I went recently for the first time in about 15 years to go to my first Reds game at GABP. Loved it.
2. Tennessee - I have some good friends from there, Nashville is a cool city, Memphis BBQ is the ****, and the Smoky Mountains are beautiful.
3-5 Some combination of Missouri/Illinois/Virginia
6. Indiana - Indy's there. The rest sucks. It's a weird place.
7. West Virginia - It's like the sad parts of Kentucky but sadder.

Illinois is a dumpster fire. West Kentucky can complain about being forgotten or not ending at Bowling Green, but Southern Illinois is truly the bastard child. If it's not Chicago, nobody cares about it.

There are places in southeast Missouri that should be close to West Kentucky that nobody visits because the roads are awful and you have to go through Cairo, Illinois.

So, Tennessee wins by default for most far West Kentucky peeps.

1. Michigan (I live so far south in IN I rarely ever go to Michigan) Don't know enough to dislike it.
2. Kentucky Kentucky would be 1...but there's Louisville
3. Ohio Rarely go to Ohio, but if I do it's because I'm going to a Reds game
4 Illinois @Lexie's Dad is correct

I haven't done a lot of traveling to neighboring states lately. Usually only pass through a few on my way to somewhere else, but here is my list based on past travels and passing through some of them.
  • 1. Ohio - Many trips through the southern part of the state. I enjoyed the trips to Cincinnati for King's Island growing up. Also attended some Reds games in the past there. Dayton wasn't bad either. I visited the Air Force Museum a few times and had some ROTC competitions up there.
  • 2. Tennessee - We had fun visiting Gatlinburg about 10 years ago (before word got out of the ridiculously good Papa John's Pizza) and will probably go again in the near future. I've passed through Nashville a number of times, but haven't had a chance to visit there. Heard lots of good things and probably will visit one day soon.
  • 3. Illinois - Enjoyed visiting Chicago for a few days, but didn't get to see enough. So I hope to go back there in the next couple of years. Had an ROTC competition in Champaign. Got to stay at Chanute AFB while there and had a great time.
  • 4. Missouri - Only got to pass through it for the most part, but got a look at Kansas City and St Louis while coming back home from the Air Force. I did stop and checked some of St Louis out and it looked worthy of a more thorough visit down the road.
  • 5. Indiana - I live about 15 minutes from Indiana, but rarely visit. Other than Indianapolis, not much worth traveling to see. I normally only go to Indiana to visit relatives or to go to Huber's Orchard and Winery.
  • 6. Virginia - I haven't been to Virginia yet and when I do it will probably move up the list. I likely will take the family to Virginia Beach one of these days. I also want to take a trip to Washington DC and will likely visit the areas around there.
  • 7. West Virginia - I also haven't been to West Virginia, but I really don't care if I do. Nothing there worth traveling to that I can't already see in Eastern Kentucky (scenery). I'll probably just pass through on my way to somewhere else.

Tennessee at the top of the list if you take out sports. Tennessee at the bottom of the list if you include sports.
