Chris Berman, the longtime ESPN sportscaster who has been with the company since 1979, is leaving the network after next football season, multiple sources tell The Big Lead. Berman is in the final year of his contract, which ends sometime after the 2016-2017 football season. He is expected to retire, rather than leave for another network.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz declined comment this week.

Berman, 61, joined the network a month after its inception in 1979 and in addition to being one of the company’s longest-tenured employees, he’d certainly go on ESPN’s Mount Rushmore. As such, the network has lavish plans for a send-off that one source said might be akin to the way the Lakers sent Kobe Bryant into retirement. ESPN is currently preparing “summer camp” for its NFL TV team – which will feature new faces like Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss and Charles Woodson – and plans are being hatched for Berman’s send-off.

Who will replace Berman on the network’s popular “Monday Night Countdown” and “Sunday NFL Countdown” shows? Many have written that longtime NFL Live host Trey Wingo is a natural fit to replace Berman, but there is a strong internal push for Suzy Kolber to take over Berman’s chair.

No decision is expected anytime soon.

Dog Berman all you want, but I always thought he was a likable guy who clearly loved football. I met him once at the Green Bay Airport before Favre's last home game as a Packer. Very funny guy who told me that "the Swami" makes his picks based on which coach he is better friends with.

Where did I say anything bad about him? Because of a notorious video that will forever be apart of his legacy should be mentioned. Now that you have opened up the discussion. I posted what will always be a lasting impression in my eyes of someone, that I am free to do so even if you do not approve. Someone we are supposed to get our sports coverage on tv. What are your excuses for his actions? A mistake? A pretty big one. Praise his name all you want but a rich man on TV, unfathomably degrade and humiliate the normal everyday workers behind the scenes who bust their butts for their jobs as if they are just his pawns making his life easier, and using the lord's name in vein caught on TV is not acceptable at all. His time has come. Your experience with him does nothing to change my perception of him and many of ESPNs annoying as hell trolls. His act especially at the Home Run Derby has run dry. I had nothing against him until I seen this video treating his workers and sexual harassment lawsuits against him and multiple other claims against of such nature. Seems to me it just wasn't one mistake but has a shady character.

1) I wasn't referring to you. A lot of people hate Berman; I never thought he was that bad.
2) I'm pretty religious, but I'll be goddamned if I don't drop a GD every so often.
3) I don't even know the other stories you are talking about
4) Chill bruh

They're not stories. Actual events, google is your friend and will find the validation of the occurrences if you bother to care. You are right, a lot of people do not like Berman. He's earned his reputation. His act is old. Well, coming from the liberal PC network that ESPN is and blurting GD several times in one setting on live TV is unacceptable at all cause. Even doing it under your breath and no cameras around. The Lord still hears you. The same people couldn't even let the ghosts stay in the closets of athletes as they retire like Brett Favre & Peyton Manning before they retired, reporting everything they can to throw dirt on their names on their way out. No it shouldn't be hidden but there controversies deserve the same.

Good. I've dumped ***** in a cavernous public toilets that made better sounds splashing in the water than the concoction of words that fall out of his mouth. I honestly hope he dies. He's ****ing terrible and an enormous *******. Hope he gets pinned in some child porn ring or something, goes to the pen, and gets pounded by DeShawn in the backbackbackbackbackbackbackbackback side.

Why is he an ******* again? Cause he yelled at some flunky producers who were screwing up on the job?

Well he made a barely entertaining home run derby completely unwatchable year after year after year. So he had that going for him.

I think you meant to say artery.

or you could, ya know, just spell it correctly and use the correct form so as to save anyone else the trouble like a true gentleman would.
Really Captain Obvious, I had no idea. Also, you didn't have to read it. I'm not sneaky and act like the mistakes of mine weren't made when they're called out. It is what it is. Missing the point of the second post of our conversation of the use of vein and artery being a "true gentleman"

Maybe, just maybe he will take a few more the jackass' at ESPN with him when he goes, then I might start watching Sportscenter again. The least he can do is take Neal Everett, John what ever his last name is and a dozen or so of the other clowns with him. With the exception of actually watching a game they televise, that station is almost unwatchable for me.
