Having spent several years in both Houston and Austin, it's really sad to see this flooding. I'm seeing some of the pics of Houston and I'm just shocked because I know these areas and to see them flooded up to red lights is unreal. Family and friends are safe so far but this thing isn't even close to over yet. Anyone else got family/friends in Texas? How they doing? Prayers up.

they're talking 50in of rain before this all over in Houston, that's just hard to wrap your head around. That's twice what they currently got, sheesh
I live in Houston and this is really, really bad. I've got a minor leak in my ceiling and some water in the garage, but I'm one of the lucky ones. Worst thing about this is that there's really no end in sight. Public schools in the area have now been closed through Labor Day. Please donate to the Red Cross if you're able, lots of less fortunate folks here have already lost everything.
And gas prices are about to skyrocket, so fill up now if you can, no matter where you are.

Not up to hurricane Alvin's records yet but pretty bad still. Houston normally gets 50 inches of rain per year, over a few days would be epic.

It seems like we've gotten stories of Houston flooding twice a year for about three years now. Has it always been like this or just a string of bad luck.
Houston is basically a bowl and it is nothing but concrete. Seems like nearly any big rainstorm brings flooding to certain areas but there are some areas that have never flooded like this. Ukalum glad to hear your family is ok and catsby90 stay safe! Things are going to get worse before they get better.

I was supposed to go on Tuesday... the group I'm seeing is taking a "wait and see" approach to holding the meetings at this point. I cancelled my flight as I'm not stepping foot down there for the next three weeks. Gonna be a mess.

My retired dad is going down there Tuesday with a group from his church to help cleanup.

Lost power for 1/2 day so lucky there so far. Storm water was within couple inches from coming in house this morning and most of day. Sat on front porch thinking why didn't I buy flood insurance? So far so good and hoping for same same. Saying Harvey is going to swing around and go right over us for added drenching. What you see on tv sure ain't fake news I'll tell ya!

if you're talking to me you are definitely barking up the wrong tree. I lived several years in Texas and some of my best memories are from there. Met nothing but great people down in Houston and a lot of them I'm sure voted for your guy. Doesn't mean squat to how I feel about Texas...second home in my mind.
Lived in Kingwood (about 20 mi NNE of downtown Houston) for 6+ years and moved to CO in May. Feel very fortunate that I'm not in that mess. Houston area had at least 2 major floods in the last 4 years we lived there but I think this one will be clearly the worst. Have been in contact with many of my friends in the area all weekend and they're all safe, just stranded and dreading more rain and the months-long cleanup/recovery period. It's complete disaster. Houston is built on 7 bayous, is located at very low altitude and it doesn't take much to flood. But, this is getting ridiculous. I'm wondering if building codes and drainage design haven't been compromised in order to build more homes, shopping centers and office centers.

Next door to the condos sat Juan's Used Cars. The parking lot was unpaved, dusty as hell, and the main office little more than a shack.

I agree. Unfortunately I can't erase the things I've seen the OP say about people. Pretty terrible.

The pictures are just gut wrenching and heart breaking. I lived in the Lone Star state/DFW area for 6 years in the 80's. I haD some friends in Houston, Bay City, Corpus and Galveston so I know that area. No human being should ever have to go through what these folks are going through, however Mother Nature can be vicious and relentless, We donated to the Red Cross last night however I feel so helpless sitting on my couch watching these fine people struggle just to survive. If I had the resources and the time off work, I would round up some Kentuckians and go help in any way I could..
Flooded out of my home south east of Houston. Fortunate to have friends to stay with until I can get things sorted out. What is happening cannot be described by pictures or words. I have nothing but great things to say about the neighbors, strangers, friends, local churches, and police that helped us get out of the house, into temporary shelter, then to a friend's house. My employer has also been a great support.
Hate hearing the water got to you. My house is inches away at any time being in Cypress Creek area. Civilian support has been tremendous along with misc agencies. Still a couple more days of rain since Harvey hooked around and will be crossing our region.
Now rated at 500 + year flood.

Damn. So sorry to hear this. These last few days have been absolutely awful. Going to try and volunteer somewhere tomorrow if roads allow.

I'm in Houston and we have been very blessed. No water in the house, just stranded there until today. I have lots of friends and coworkers that have lost everything. It is very bad here.
