It was a Dual Threat. As a movie, it was a good Drama. As a "based on actual events" it was a good Comedy.

It’s a wonderful film, slightly embellished or not. It’s more than just about math.
All films based on actual events are sligtly embellished. Remember the Titans was slightly embellished but was still a great story.

What really happened to Gerry Bertier?

In Reel Life: Gerry gets into a terrible car accident before the championship game, and is paralyzed. In Real Life: Bertier did get into an accident, but it was after the season had ended -- he was driving home from an awards banquet, and was paralyzed from the chest down.

One of my daughters lives the movie. I tried to watch it once and last about 15 minutes before falling asleep through the rest of it

It was good. But was the part where she ran in and said to keep the heat shield on for Glenn true. Wouldn’t the guy, von braun or the flight director make that call. Did she also go behind the ibm and check it’s math?

It was a very enjoyable film, but no doubt embellished to make mainstream America feel better about themselves.

Johnson was likely the smartest mathematician at NASA in that era. It’s a shame she had to fight so hard to accomplish what she did.

Great movie. My 13-year old daughter and I saw it the other night. The subtle and not so subtle disrespect/racism was something from another world for my daughter. She picked up on the fact that the main characters were only called by their first names but the white people were addressed as Mr. and Ms. Here in the south we call everyone regardless of color Ms. _____first name or last name so it caught her attention immediately. I enjoyed Costner's character - tense at all times and for good reason.

Haven't seen this; but math/science movies have been pretty hot for a while. @LionJim - have any favorites? Good Will Hunting, A Beautiful Mind, Interstellar? I'd love to get your take on Primer - it's an independent movie about time travel written by Shane Carruth, a math major who became a filmmaker. It was widely lauded for not dubming down the science/math involved in the making of the time machine.

Whatever inaccuracies there might be in Hidden Figures, you can watch it knowing that that's the real Katherine Johnson on the screen. That great American, that shining example to us all, that's who you're seeing on the screen.

I detest both The Imitation Game and A Beautiful Mind. That wasn't Turing you were seeing up there, and that wasn't Nash you were seeing up there. I think it would be very, very difficult to portray Nash properly on screen, he was the most complicated man imaginable, so I'll give Opie and Crowe a pass. No pass for Benedict Cumberbatch, a totally phony portrayal. Alan Turing was a normal guy, for all practical purposes. From Wikipedia page of TIG:
While a few writers and researchers have tried to assign such a retrospective diagnosis to Turing,[108] and it is true that he had his share of eccentricities, the Asperger's-like traits portrayed in the film – social awkwardness, difficulty working co-operatively with others, and tendency to take things too literally – bear little relationship to the actual adult Turing. Despite enjoying working alone, Turing was sociable and had friends, was also viewed as having a sense of humour, and had good working relationships with colleagues.

Well, as soon as I hit Post I'm going onto Amazon and order Alan Turing: The Enigma, by Andrew Hodges. I have a good collection of biographies of physicists and mathematicians and this will be an excellent addition. Turing: a very great man.

My first time seeing it. It’s about MATHS. o_O . LionJim gets it. Of course, I don’t get it. 😞

LionJim, what do you think of these women’s contribution? Good film?
The movie was a bit derivative but those ladies were integral to the space program.

One of a couple of movies my home town gets a (real) cameo in. The centrifuge scene--that's the then Johnsville NAS in Warminster. The base is gone, but the centrifuge still exists and is a museum and event center.

Good film, slightly embellished.

what??? It was released in Jan. 2017, and has been on TV since 2018, I think. I saw it on the big screen, and quite a few times on TV.

Thought this might be interesting for you fellows.

What do few people know about the actor Jack Black?

The Apollo 13 rocket was the third to attempt to go to the Moon, in 1970. The astronauts had a problem with an explosion on board and had to return to Earth safely just 5 hours after taking off.

This was only possible thanks to one woman: Judith Love Cohen. She created a guidance system that would be used in the event of an emergency turn, which is exactly what happened.
But Judith was pregnant and finished the job already in the hospital in labor! Now that comes a hidden curiosity: who was her son? Jack Black, the actor of famous movies like “School of Rock” and “Shallow Hal”.

Have you ever thought about being a Hollywood actor and also telling everyone that your mother saved three NASA astronauts while you were born?
