Is Gould a HOFer? Garoppolo reminds me of John Shaffer - all he does is win.

Robbie Gould has never missed a post season field goal. Never missed. The 49ers are most likely moving on from Garoppolo after the season, but all he does is win. John Shaffer wasn't flashy but all he did was win.

Remind me again why the Bears cut him loose. Not good optics for the Bears right now. As a Cowboys' fan I would take Gould in a heartbeat.

Maybe, but probably not.

There are four kickers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Two excelled at other positions. Lou Groza made all-pro multiple times as an OT. George Blanda passed for nearly 27,000 yards.

The two pure kickers were the dominant kickers for a good part of their generation. Jan Stenerud was all pro 6-7 times. Morten Andersen kicked like forever and as All-Decade twice. Gould has made one Pro Bowl.

Good points and I agree but Gould should have been a Pro Bowler like 4 or 5 times not just one.

I'm a Niners fan and root for Jimmy every game but honestly the 49ers are winning despite him not because of him. Yesterday's stat line - 11 of 19 for 131 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT for a rating of 57.1 and there were at least three wounded ducks that could have been picked off. It was to the point where every time Jimmy put the ball in the air I was holding my breath. He'll have to play better than that for SF to get past Tampa Bay or the Rams.

Where is Jimmy next year? No way he is in SF, correct? I have heard the Steelers on Pittsburgh sports radio. But after that pick to Amos...no way I want him in Pittsburgh(Steeler fan here). Saw enough lousy throws the past 2 years....

The Stillers have their QB. Mason’s got this.

Did Big Ben make his retirement official? Is there a chance he comes back for one more year? In that playoff game against KC he looked pretty good, actually better than half the QB’s in the NFL.

Gould gave a shout out to Angelo, owner of a soccer shoe company in Lancaster for the new cleat he wore. I'm guessing someone on the board from that area knows who Angelo is?

No. Gould is not getting in the HoF. Even though kickers, punters, and OLine are underrepresented in the hall, I just don’t see him getting in. Currently, Justin Tucker is by far a better kicker. Of recent kickers, Vinatieri and Janikowski have a better shot at getting votes than Gould. Gould may have better numbers than both, but I think Vinatieri was a better kicker, plus he will get the Championship(s) bump all players get when it comes to HoF voting.

Nick Lowery, Jeff Wilkins, John Carney, and Jason Hanson were all better kickers in my opinion and they’re not getting in either.

I think Vinatieri might get in, and Tucker should get based on his career so far, but longevity seems to be an even bigger factor for kickers.

Jimmy G won't be back. If he does win a Super Bowl there will be a contingent of Niners fans arguing 'but look he's a winner!' but it won't matter. SF gave up multiple first round picks to move high enough in the draft to get Trey Lance. He is clearly the future.

looks like the 49ers will Alex Smith themselves, run off a guy who all he did was win.

Jimmy G a little more talented than Shaffer, but good comparison though..

I thought the only quarterback who won all the the time was Chuck Burkhart.

“ Chuck Burkhart is nowhere near the top of Penn State's all-time passing leaders; however, he did lead Penn State to back-to-back undefeated seasons.

Burkhart was the quarterback for Penn State's 1968 and 1969 undefeated campaigns. His three-yard run helped Penn State win the 1969 Orange Bowl over the Kansas Jayhawks.

Burkhart does not have gaudy statistics, but winning is what matters the most.

Penn State's glory days did not start until later, but Burkhart helped put Penn State on the map during his career.”

Garroppolo is like Shaffer? Really? Even Shaffer would laugh at that comment.

He hasn't made many All Pro teams either and there is some overlap in the voters with the HoF. Can't see them changing their minds when he becomes eligible, unless he kicks for another ten years and then all bets are off.

As someone suggested earlier Vinatieri has the best chance as a kicker to make the HoF and Justin Tucker if he continues along the same clip for at least another five years.

And I got a glimpse on the ticker(espn) that the Stillers did something with Haskins...franchising him? Maybe Haskins and Rudolph both got this....
Good grief I hope not wrt haskins.

It seems that Pittsburgh could probably get Garoppolo for a second-round pick. Maybe have to add a late round one or something in next year's draft. He's scheduled to make about 25 million and I think even if Ben retires they are on the hook for about 10 million next year for him. Going to have to do some serious contract reworking to make those numbers a little more palatable.
If they would do that then I would absolutely have to spend the first round Draft pick on an offensive lineman.

THIS ^^^^. I am also a Niners fan at this point. (Was a Raiders fan until they reverted to form and once again became the Traitors. Las Vegas can have them. Never again.)

The Niners are winning because of their defensive front seven, Deebo Samuel. Elijah Mitchell, George Kittle, and Gould. Garoppolo's penchant for tossing up wounded ducks - and into the flat, of all places - from his back feet when he gets pressured is gonna kill the Niners at some point. The Packers had at least three opportunities for a Pick Six. Don't think for a second that the Rams won't be looking to capitalize on that tendency. They have Aaron Donald and Vaughn Miller to apply the necessary pressure, too.

That #54 is not half bad either....Rams front 4 gives the QB no time to throw...but somehow, someway, the Niners beat them twice...

John Shaffer was once accurately described as being, "As exciting as listening to bowling on the radio". I have reused the quote many many times through the years.

Does Gould have better numbers than Vinatieri & Janikowski? I don't know as I didn't compare their stats, which is why I said "Gould may have better numbers than both." As everyone knows, getting HoF votes is more than stats, which is why I think that Vinatieri & Janikowski "have a better shot at getting votes than Gould."

Again, in my opinion, stats are not the only factor in ranking players. Again, in my opinion, Vinatieri, Lowery, Wilkins, Careny and Hanson were better kickers than Gould. Of those, I think Lowery was the best. I think that Tucker is better than all that I've listed.

Very interesting It is a shame because I met John several times , and he was a very classy guy and very succesfull on Wall Street as well He had however absolutely no skill or talent what so ever and although he was a good leader he never threw a game winning td his entire career He wasn't going to He was the classic Joe Paterno qb , No talent or skill just hand the ball off and get out of the way

Actually Gould does have better stats than Vinatieri. Higher kicking percentage accuracy during regular season plus a far better kicking percentage accuracy during the playoffs (albeit admittedly with less attempts). Gould has never missed either a FG or PAT in the playoffs. Vinatieri was 56 for 69 kicking FGs and 70 for 71 in PATs. What really surprised me is the Gould's career long FG is 58 yards while Vinatieri's was 57. I will concede Tucker but I would take Gould over all of the rest of the guys you listed.
