When I was responding to birthday Husker in another thread, I did not type "Go Big Red", because Oklahoma is Big Red. But then I realized, it isn't chanted anymore at football games or by Sooner fans. It totally disappeared. Gone. Erased from tradition. And it has been a long time since I last heard it. Are there really adult Sooner fans out there who have never heard the chant "GO. BIG. RED."?
It just occurred to me. A part of Sooner tradition has disappeared.

S22 good observation. I guess I had never really noticed it either. But you're right, now that you mention it, I haven't heard a Sooner fan say that in years. I wonder why that part of Sooners tradition has been left in the past? Curious to see if anyone has some good responses as to why.

I think you have the answer SS. No way to know for sure, but it sure makes sense.
Someone mentioned the "tradition" ended in the 90s during the Blake beatings, another mentioned the Boomer/Big Red Sports incident. I think it started long before that as I recall when I was a student in the late 70s, early 80s, I don't recall doing a "Go Big Red" chant as fans. Of course we always yelled "Boomer" and "Sooner" from one side of the stadium to another, but no "Go Big Red" chant. I do remember seeing it printed on t-shirts and hats, but those seemed to fade away over time and now you never see anything with "Go Big Red" printed on it. If memory serves me correctly, there is a song that the OU band plays where we used to say at the end of the song, "Go Big Red," we now say "Go OU."
These days, I now associate "Go Big Red" with Nebraska and never use it in reference to OU. Truthfully, I don't miss it. I always thought it was kind of a misnomer anyway since our school colors were crimson and cream. Calling ourselves as "red" just didn't seem right, so if schools like Nebraska, or Cornell want to go by "Big Red," then I'm okay with that.

I didn't start attending OU games until 1980 when I moved to Oklahoma. All through the 80's and into the 90's, they held up a sign to the east stands that read "GO", then to the north end that read "BIG", then to the west stands that read "RED". This went on for several minutes during every game. So your recollection is a bit cloudy.
I agree I think ou finally pumped out enough graduates to let the fan base know your colors didnt actually include red. And it's a gum.
